The Tissue Materials Science group within Development Biological Sciences at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Scientist. The successful candidate will lead and support early discovery programs within the Regenerative Medicine franchise, with responsibilities that include designing, prototyping, and evaluating new implantable surgical device concepts. Additional responsibilities involve executing comprehensive studies to assess the performance characteristics and biological responses of implantable materials, including extracellular matrices, resorbable polymers, and other advanced biomaterials.
Preferred qualifications include expertise in biopolymers, resorbable polymers, as well as relevant fabrication and testing methodologies (analytical, mechanical, and preclinical). Prior experience in implantable device fabrication and characterization, CAD design, 3D printing, advanced fabrication techniques, and tissue engineering/regeneration is highly desirable. Candidates must be able to perform hands-on laboratory work independently and execute on deliverables in a timely manner. The ideal candidate will stay current with scientific literature and advances in relevant therapeutic areas, demonstrate scientific leadership, and effectively collaborate within a cross-functional team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Leads the design and execution of studies to support early discovery research, including developing new prototypes and assays, and managing outsourced research activities as needed.
- Analyzes, summarizes, and presents data to internal and external stakeholders; writes, reviews, and issues technical reports, memoranda, and other documentation for distribution.
- Interfaces and collaborates with colleagues from both functional and cross-functional teams.
- Organizes, schedules, and participates in project team meetings to plan activities, review progress, and communicate project status to supervisors, project team leaders, research managers, and R&D committees.
- Coordinates with patent counsel to generate documentation supporting intellectual property protection.
- Trains and mentors research associates when appropriate.
- Remains current on the latest developments in relevant therapeutic areas and maintains awareness of the competitive landscape through literature review, discussions with key opinion leaders, and participation in scientific meetings.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and typically 12 years of experience, OR Master’s Degree and typically 10 years of experience, OR PhD and typically 4 years of experience.
- Background and/or experience in tissue engineering, particularly in the design and fabrication of medical devices using resorbable synthetic polymers or biopolymers, is preferred.
- Experience in the characterization and analysis of biological and synthetic biomaterials is an advantage.
- Willingness to perform hands-on laboratory work, including the in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro studies.
- Strong scientific skills, with the ability to design and execute hypothesis-driven research and demonstrate creative problem-solving.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with peers and cross-functional teams.
- Capable of working independently and within teams, managing multiple priorities and tasks efficiently.

Pay Range: $
106500 - 202500 USD
Where We Work
Role is exclusively performed at a site or office and onsite presence is required. Employees who are site/office-based and can occasionally perform their role virtually work both in the office and remotely*, following the policies and regulations in place at their location. US Employees must be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Three days in the office is the minimum; some individuals or teams may require more in-office days due to meetings, business/project needs or their role.
