The Director of Functional Capabilities Development is accountable for the strategy, direction, and execution of Functional Capabilities Development for Medical Affairs + Health Impact (MHI) contributing to building a world class organization. The role is responsible for aligning with the Director of the Leadership and Capability team on MHI prioritized capabilities’ gaps and developing the corresponding learning/education plan required to drive proficiency across related capabilities/deliverables. The individual is responsible for assigned capabilities needs assessment, strategic prioritization, resource planning and overall execution of MHI functional capabilities development strategy for assigned areas of responsibility. This individual will also be responsible to design, govern and ensure maintenance of innovative learning approaches and tools which facilitate engagement across audiences. This role will create relevant KPIs and metrics to assess the development progress and adjust the plans accordingly. This director will partner with relevant stakeholders across MHI, Commercial Leadership Development (when appropriate), AbbVie Learning Partners, and Human Resources, as needed to leverage current resources, create novel approaches when appropriate, and align with overarching AbbVie MHI strategic priorities.
Responsibilities:
- Accountable for the overall strategic direction, of assigned projects/areas of responsibility, prioritization, and deliverables of MHI leadership and capabilities development plans aligned to MHI and business priorities.
- Main point of contact with key stakeholders for assigned projects to ensure alignment with business objectives and priorities when developing and maintaining the development strategies and resources to advance MHI team capabilities.
- Proactively develops and coordinates MHI capability assessments for prioritized roles and capabilities; creates and drives development strategies, execution, and impact measurement to enhance functional capabilities and performance.
- Co-create the development plans and related resources across prioritized roles, functions, and functional capabilities in partnership with the Director and Lead, Leadership & Capability Development, key stakeholders within MHI and across AbbVie, establishing strong partnerships with Business HR and other AbbVie learning partners across Abbvie.
- Proactively Identifies and leverage best practices internally and externally to advance functional development and capabilities building. And proactively remains informed of current learning technology platform capabilities, neuroscience and training research, and pharmaceutical industry and healthcare trends. Educates and Elevates LCD team, junior colleagues and strategic partners on current approaches and innovative approaches in adult learning.
- Apply innovative developmental and learning design (“the how”) for prioritized initiatives, (e.g., learning resources, simulation, coaching etc.) and create relevant KPIs to measure and advance desired capabilities.
- Advance the adoption and usage of The Academy content. Apply continuous improvement approaches to ensure content is meeting learner needs in a changing environment.
- Lead the strategy and execution of new hire and transfer employee functional capabilities onboarding (applicable to scope of responsibility) into the MHI organization; identify appropriate approaches, content, and resources common and unique to audiences based upon role; lead change management strategy to ensure awareness and adoption of existing and new functional capabilities.
- Leads the Functional Capability Development strategy and execution of MHI functional development programs and approaches, identifying best practices and gaps, as well as opportunities to enhance programs/approaches, creating efficiency and enabling agility where appropriate.
- Creates both short and long-term plans (i.e., strategy, budget, timeline) and socializes them with appropriate level of leadership and functional stakeholders to gain alignment before implementation.
- Partner with Business HR and other AbbVie learning partners including international learning to explore approaches to advance functional capabilities development as relevant.
- Implement learning/training evaluation process and metrics to measure and evaluate training completion and effectiveness to ensure compliance (CIA, policies, etc.) and to drive employee performance.
- Implement design and delivery of multi-functional (70/20/10 model) AI capabilities learning solutions to global stakeholders; partner across Medical Affairs + Health Impact (MHI) to drive, implement, and provide educational and experiential AI use cases that enhance functional capabilities and operational effectiveness.
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or business field required. Advanced degree or extensive experience in training or organizational development is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 10-12 years of experience in pharma with at least 3-4 years in medical affairs or significant experience in leading cross-functional training organization preferred.
- 3-5 years leadership experience managing multiple projects. Experience in leading multiple projects in a highly matrixed organization across multiple countries (time zones) both virtually and in-person preferred.
- 2-4 years of training and development experience as the leader of a training organization preferred.
- Excellent leadership, self-management, and organizational skills; able to manage workload, set personal and/or team priorities and adjust as needed; accounting competence for development of budget proposals and management of final resources required.
- Demonstrated ability to set and execute strategies with global and cross-functional/departmental impact required.
- Strong business acumen; ability to think strategically and translate a strategy to an innovative and implementable plan.
- Knowledge of and hands-on experience with the neuroscience of learning, platforms, performance improvement, and Learning Management systems and operations preferred.
- Must have proven experience in situations of conflict resolution, problem solving and strategic plan development
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills; Experienced skill set to effectively solicit stakeholder inputs/feedback through facilitation of both in-person and remote engagement discussions/workshops.
- Demonstrated experience with the design, deployment, or governance of artificial intelligence (AI) platforms and use cases in a global and cross-functional environment; strong understanding of AI-driven business transformation, stakeholder management, and the ability to drive adoption of AI-driven tools and solutions

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this postingbased on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more orless than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

Where We Work
Role is primarily site- or office-based but can occasionally be performed remotely. Employees who are site/office-based and can occasionally perform their role virtually work both in the office and remotely*, following the policies and regulations in place at their location. US Employees must be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Three days in the office is the minimum; some individuals or teams may require more in-office days due to meetings, business/project needs or their role.
