Purpose:
The Comparative Medicine Bay Area (CMBA) department provides health surveillance, preventative disease programs and daily husbandry and care for all laboratory animals at ABA. The department has primary responsibility for assuring that the Animal Care Program meets the standards for continued accreditation by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and that the animal Program at ABA meets all pertinent governmental regulations.
The Sr. Technician is responsible for the assistance and oversight of the husbandry and care for the animals. They also have direct contact with animals providing minimal husbandry and cage changing. The person will perform technical procedures and assisting the Veterinarian and Manager with various duties. They will also train personnel on technical and/or husbandry policies and procedures.
Major Responsibilities:
- Manage the procurement of all regular consumables and services needed to operate the vivarium
- Perform all husbandry duties when needed
- Perform PO, IV, ID, IP, and SC injections and training
- Perform blood collection methods and trainings
- Perform euthanasia methods such as CO2, isoflurane, exsanguination and associated trianing
- Perform animal ID such as ear punching, ear tagging, and ink marking
- Perform anesthesia of rodents and associated record keeping and training
- Perform tissue harvest collection/necropsy
- Provide assistance with animal health and environmental monitoring & equipment validation
- Train other CMBA technicians, pharmacology, contractors, and interns
- Perform facility weekly, or more regularly, walk-throughs
- Review weekly logs, sanitation records, equipment certification, supply/stock expiration, etc., and promptly and clearly report any problems to supervisor
- Learn and perform surgical procedures
- Scheduling of staff (husbandry/technical) as needed
- Provide project leadership to animal care technicians
- Other duties as needed
- LAT certification with High School Diploma/GED and 9 years experience in laboratory animal field, or LAT with AS and 7 years experience, or LAT with BS and 5 years experience, or LATG certification with High School Diploma/GED and 7 years experience, or LATG with AS and 5 years experience, or LATG with BS and 3 years experience.
- Able to perform repetitive procedures.
- Must be adaptable and flexible to meet demands of ever changing work environment.
- Must be able to trouble shoot cage wash machinery.
- Takes initiative on and communicates about problems in facility.
- Understands and acts on detailed instructions.
- Must have proficiency in computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Maintains concise, accurate, and comprehensive written records.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Must have good organizational skills and keen observation skills.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
