Job Description

AbbVie’s Ophthalmology Discovery Research group is looking for a highly motivated and experienced ocular scientist with a multidisciplinary background in bioinformatics to play an integral role in target identification and early drug development of therapies for ophthalmic diseases. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of Ophthalmology Discovery Research in multi-omics data generation and integration to advance the understanding of disease pathology.   The successful candidate will enable synergies between drug discovery and bioinformatics and support our research group as a liaison with bioinformatic partners at different AbbVie locations.

 

This position will be based in Irvine, California, and the candidate will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment to leverage cutting-edge multi-omics technology. The successful candidate will support research activities, applying cellular or molecular biology techniques, and lead projects in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders /experts.  The candidate will be responsible for working with cross-functional teams to help integrate biological and computational approaches to facilitate preclinical experimental design in models and human donor samples, interrogate omics-datasets in coordination with bioinformaticians, coordinate research activities across multiple ocular indications, and formulate workflows for data integration into the AbbVie networks. The successful candidate will preferably have proficiency with multiple omics data types.  

 

 

 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

 

1.        Conduct research on ocular diseases using both cellular/molecular biology and bioinformatics tools and techniques.  

 

 

2.        Act as a liaison with cross-functional teams, including biologists, geneticists, and bioinformaticians, to design experiments and perform data analysis.  

 

 

3.        Perform data mining, integration, and visualization to identify patterns and extract meaningful insights from ocular datasets.  

 

 

4.        Contribute to the development of innovative approaches and the latest advancement in ocular research.  

 

 

5.        Prepare scientific reports, manuscripts, and presentations.  

 

 

6.        Maintain accurate and organized records of experiments, methodologies, and data analysis and support omics data management and integration into AbbVie’s workflow.

 

 

7.        Adhere to ethical guidelines and promote a culture of responsible research conduct.  

 


Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 12 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience.

 

1.        Effective communication and organization skills with the ability to support multiple projects, with a proven track-record to meet project milestones.

 

 

2.        Proven experience in bioinformatics data, tools, and analysis, including proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python or R.  

 

 

3.        Hands-on experience with a range of omics-platforms ie. genomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics data analysis and data-integration.  

 

 

4.        Hands-on experience with human and/or animal tissue processing and single-cell preparation for genomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics data analysis.  

 

 

5.        Experience with molecular biology and biochemistry, in vitro culture functional assays, and the application of these techniques to pharmacological and molecular target validation studies.  

 

 

6.        Hands-on experience with animal handling and in vivo modeling will be a plus but not required.
