AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative scientist with a proven track record in physicochemical characterization and application of drug delivery approaches in preclinical development of small molecule and/or biologics candidates. The primary role of this position is to serve as an MPDD project leader on discovery programs, providing preclinical formulation support for initial safety and efficacy assessments. The ideal candidate will have experience with a range of formulation techniques as well as various routes of administration. Familiarity with solid oral dosage forms including nanoparticles, amorphous systems and lipids is expected. Experience with lipid nanoparticles is a plus.
Key responsibilities include:
- Execution of studies to characterize the physicochemical properties of candidate molecules in preclinical development as it relates to crystalline or amorphous solid forms, their solubilities/rates of dissolution and their impact on formulation/excipient selection
- Design and preparation of formulations, including solutions/suspensions/emulsions, to enable preclinical acute and chronic in vivo studies
- Interpret and communicate results from characterization and formulation studies to advise the selection of molecules with properties suitable for development
Basic:
- BS (12+ yrs. experience), MS (10+ yrs. experience) or PhD (4+ yrs experience) in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or Chemistry.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with the role that physicochemical properties play in drug delivery and formulation design.
- Working knowledge of physiological barriers to drug absorption, including various potential transport mechanisms.
- Working knowledge of typical formulation approaches and routes of administration (i.e. IV, SC, IP, PO) across multiple species.
- Experience with analytical approaches toward physicochemical characterization of pharmaceutical dosage forms (i.e. HPLC, UPLC, MS, DSC, TGA, DVS, PXRD, dissolution)
- Experience with various milling techniques and particle size analysis
- Understanding crystalline and amorphous materials and their impact on drug development
- Knowledge of preclinical and clinical formulation development principles relevant to lipid nanoparticle formulations.
- Excellent self-management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a cross functional team setting.
Key AbbVie Competencies:
- Builds strong relationships with peers to facilitate communication and enable higher performance.
- Learns fast, grasps the “essence” and can change the course quickly where indicated.
- Connects ideas from disparate fields, integrates data and information quickly, and takes risks to achieve the highest performance.
- Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo.
- Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
- Embraces the ideas of others and nurtures innovation
