Job Description

Purpose

AbbVie’s Discovery Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine group is seeking an accomplished and highly motivated scientist to join the Protein Sciences team. This team fosters collaboration and innovation across drug discovery, driving the engineering and advancement of biologic and genetic medicine therapies. The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in enzymology, including recombinant enzyme generation, kinetic analysis, and structure-function studies. Proficiency in computational structural tools, enzyme activity assays, and protein formulation (including lyophilization techniques) is highly desirable. Additional qualifications include a background in metabolic physiology. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as the role requires clearly presenting scientific concepts and findings to both scientific and non-scientific stakeholders. Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, express, characterize and optimize a wide variety of metabolic enzymes relevant to disease biology and therapeutic interventions
  • Devise and execute novel research strategies, address project challenges, and deliver thoughtful, data-driven solutions.
  • Manage external collaborations with contract research organizations (CROs) to ensure the timely delivery of data and reagents
  • Strategically advancing projects, providing expert opinions and collaborating with peers and stakeholders in multidisciplinary teams
  • Contribute to research leading to peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and presentations at scientific conferences.

Qualifications

Key Qualifications:

  • Senior Scientist I: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically, 10 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.
  • Senior Scientist II: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically, 12 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience.
  • Distinguished record of research accomplishments, as evidenced by publications, presentations, and scientific recognition.
  • Demonstrated expertise in enzymological characterization techniques and recombinant protein generation.
  • Strong knowledge of kinetic and structural analysis, including experience with advanced computational tools and AI platforms.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to scientific integrity and collaboration.

The level of the position will be determined by candidate level of experience and qualifications.
