Job Description

The Senior Counsel, Legal Strategy, will be responsible for identifying, developing and executing key legal strategies to advance company priorities.  The individual in this role will leverage industry experience and innovative thinking while partnering with both internal subject matter experts and external resources to drive creative solutions to complex legal challenges in the life sciences and pharmaceutical regulatory environment.  The role will primarily be focused on emerging challenges in the U.S. pricing, reimbursement and access ecosystem; however, there will be the opportunity to evolve the role to have a broader and more global focus.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with internal stakeholders and business partners to identify key areas of complex legal challenges impacting initiative prioritized by senior leaders.
  • Analyze and assess challenges to develop strategies to navigate and/or shape the external environment and advance company objectives. Strategies will often be cross-functional and include engagement with external stakeholders like government agencies, industry associations/ coalitions and third parties in the healthcare ecosystem.
  • Determine prioritization, timeline and resourcing needs for strategic initiatives and gain senior leader alignment.
  • Drive cross-functional team execution and progress.
  • Develop lines of communication with internal subject matter experts and key business counterparts to inform strategic initiatives and help build cohesive AbbVie strategies. 
  • Work to consistently strengthen and improve agility, prioritization and innovative thinking within the AbbVie Legal organization and key cross-functional partners.

Qualifications

  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school and in good standing with the state bar of the jurisdiction in which your office will be located (or ability to gain licensure in the state in which your office will be located).
  • 7+ years of experience with a focus on life sciences and/or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, communication, leadership, and influence skills.
  • Candidate must enjoy solving complex and dynamic problems and have an interest in helping to proactively shape the external environment.
  • Comfort taking on high-visibility, high-impact projects with exposure to senior leaders.
  • Adept at coordinating and facilitating cross-functional efforts and gaining alignment from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-pressure, matrixed environments.
  • Experience in covering an array of topic areas and adapting to new subject matter/ arenas rapidly and effectively.
  • While substantive expertise is valued, a preferred candidate is one who wants to rapidly develop professionally by taking on new challenges and learning about new subject matters.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​
