The Neurotoxin Research Group at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated and innovative candidate for the role of Scientist II, Biological Research. The successful candidate for this position will be a technical expert in his/her field and will play a critical role in pharmacological characterization of protein-based therapeutics. He/she will be required to work independently on a variety of in vivo animal pharmacology models to help characterize and evaluate biological compounds. This individual will have strong background in scientific research, with the ability to organize, analyze and interpret results, come forward with recommendations and present the findings to senior personnel or in team meetings. Experience in handling and injecting rodents by various routes is required. Experience with tissue dissection, histological techniques, as well as other laboratory techniques is an advantage. Working knowledge of neuroscience is a plus. The successful candidate will be collaborating extensively with other Research Associates and Scientists in a multidisciplinary team, while taking personal responsibility for the success of assigned tasks and projects.
Key responsibilities:
- Independently design, plan, and execute vivo studies and analyze pharmacological results to answer scientific questions.
- Develop and optimize experimental protocols and methodologies.
- Ensure reproducibility and reliability of experimental results.
- Set goals and meet experimental timelines and execute a strategy in alignment with the goals and broad key scientific objectives for the research.
- Demonstrate creative ‘out of the box’ thinking to solve problems and modify experimental plans when required to achieve project goals.
- Understand the broad objectives of the project as well as their role in achieving those objectives.
- Make significant contributions to project teams through lab-based, or other work environment activities.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data using statistical methods, author protocols and scientific reports, and present data to multidisciplinary teams and to management.
- Contribute to writing and conceptual framework of publications, patents, and presentations.
- Effectively organize and present program updates and research strategies to functional leaders as well as potential and existing partners.
- Build strong relationships with cross-functional team members to accomplish the goals and requirements of the organization.
- Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, controlled drug, and animal care where applicable.
- Grasp abstract ideas, learn quickly, and pivot as needed.
- Learn, understand, and become proficient at new experimental techniques, and act as resource and mentor for junior scientists.
- Identify and propose innovative solutions to scientific problems.
- Stay current with scientific literature and advancements in the field.
Job Qualifications (minimum requirements):
- Proficiency in pharmacological assays, focusing on in vivo pharmacology.
- Direct experience with peripheral animal models and measurements is an advantage.
- Working knowledge of neuroscience, animal anatomy and histological assays and methods is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute, and interpret critical experiments.
- Ability to scientifically lead programs, learn new technologies, and train associates.
- Extremely organized with documentation of experimental plans, timelines, and technical reports.
- Experience contributing to technical reports and regulatory documents is a plus.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in data analysis software (e.g., Sigmaplot).
- Detail oriented and precise in written and oral communication.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- Ability to critically analyze data and lead teams to solve issues and make best strategic decisions.
- Highly collaborative, team-oriented, and considerate of the needs of others.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse groups within the organization.

Education & Experience:
- Master’s Degree or equivalent education and 5 or more years of experience or PhD in Pharmacology, Neuroscience or related field.
- Demonstrated track record of Scientific research and publications.
- Expertise in performing a variety of rodent in vivo behavioral and/or pharmacological assays.
- Proficiency with small animal handling, dosing of molecules through a variety of different routes and tissue harvest is required.
- Experience with histological techniques, including immunohistochemistry and microscopy techniques, as well as other laboratory techniques is a plus.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Computer skills: a working knowledge of MS-Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is required.
- Proficiency in graphing software (e.g., Sigmaplot, GraphPad prism) and statistical analyses is required.
