Job Description

The job that makes possibilities real in patients' lives. And yours.

The job that helps you get ahead in life. Moving mountains together.

Welcome to AbbVie! As part of an international company with 48,000 employees worldwide and around 3,000 employees in Germany, you will have the opportunity of addressing some of tomorrows unmet medical needs in close collaboration with your colleagues. Are you passionate about improving global health care? Do you want to contribute to improving patients' quality of life through your expertise? In a challenging work environment that offers opportunities of developing and increasing your own skills? You’ve come to the right place!

Moving mountains together – as Scientist II (all genders) Process Engineering Sciences in Biologics Product Development Science & Technology (permanent / full-time)

We are looking for a Process Engineer who is focusing on process development to support the project needs in fill-finish-manufacturing of biologics, applying theoretical and scale-down-models as appropriate.

AbbVie has a strong, established expertise in the development of injectable drug products in syringes, cartridges, or vials. Over the past three decades, AbbVie and its legacy entities made significant progress to advance its formulation and process development from empirical approaches to increasingly incorporate more in-silico and model-based techniques. Being a highly agile and efficient development organization, AbbVie Biologics Drug Product Development continuously seeks opportunities to implement in-silico research tools, develop deep process understanding to speed up and de-risk development of drug products in all project phases.

The Process Engineering (PE) Group was established to form an alliance of an engineering perspective with biopharmaceutical development. Depending on the background, the scientist gets the opportunity to introduce new methods regarding small-scale models as well as computational modeling (e.g., digital twins) into process development. The main area will be the support of the biologics drug product development for injectable drugs with a focus on heat transfer, thermo- and fluid dynamics being applied to freezing and thawing, mixing, sterile filtration, pumping, filling and lyophilization. The position will incorporate process simulation and hands-on bench experiments. Experimental and manufacturing data will be translated into the development of digital twins to result in optimized computational models to advance processes.

As Scientist, you passionately drive projects in an integrated environment among distinct subject matter experts in fields such as CFD modeling, material science and physical pharmacy, as well as experts in various analytical techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Support projects with focus on machine-oriented process engineering topics from troubleshooting to application of small-scale models and computational models
  • Serve as fill-finish expert within Product Development, Science and Technology and contact person to early-stage R&D as well as Drug Substance Manufacturing
  • Global and cross functional support of other development groups in model application, tech transfer to production, up-/downscaling, troubleshooting, generation of regulatory filing documents
  • Propose, engineer, build, test prototype machines, combine with existing equipment, integrate them in overall modular workflows, combine with e.g. 2D visual camera systems, assure automatic data generation, storage and evaluation
  • Help the organization to understand and implement simulations (from Excel sheets to CFD, DEM, FEM, …) into a routine development philosophy
  • Generate data from bench experiments and/or gather data from machines in pilot plant, internal or external runs on commercial equipment
  • Use of Quality by Design (QbD) approach, strive for simplicity and efficiency, apply Lean and/or scrum principles
  • Independently work on scientific topics, screen, assess and implement novel technologies, drive global initiatives and present results convincingly to diverse audience
  • Propose, develop and implement strategies for process optimization (machine / fill finish oriented processes as well as work processes like generation, processing, data extraction and storage of reports); explore options of AI / deep learning integration
  • Active participation in all development phases with focus on late stage projects and technical transfer to commercial production
  • Supervision of interns and bachelor/master students

  • Experience in process engineering and/ or combination product development
  • Experienced in DoE, QbD, Statistics,
  • Skilled in Lean / Scrum principles
  • Knowledgeable in AI / deep learning
  • Sound understanding of individual fill-finish related unit operations and their practical implementation, to ensure the design and procurement of the equipment to the determination of product- and scaleup-specific process parameters.

  • Independent way of working with strong decision skills while being efficient team leader as well as team member
  • Present results to a broad audience from different areas via presentations, posters and/or reports
