Job Description

Technology and Therapeutic Platforms has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist I/II to join the Small Molecule Analytical Sciences (SMAS) team at AbbVie.  The SMAS team is a global organization that provides enabling technologies to support Discovery Medicinal Chemistry initiatives. The scientist will join the Analytical and Purification Sciences group to execute High-Throughput Chemistry compound library purification and analysis and devise innovative solutions to complex analytical and separation problems through the implementation of sophisticated instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute purification of high-throughput chemistry compound libraries using preparative HPLC-MS to support small molecule drug discovery projects.
  • Collaborate with high-throughput Chemistry team through developing methods and providing technical guidance to solve analytical and purification problems.
  • Collaborate within Analytical and Purification Sciences group to develop efficient workflows for sample prioritization and client communication.
  • Maintain analytical and preparative HPLC and MS instrumentation and independently troubleshoot instrument problems.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting.
  • Keep abreast of current literature and industry trends to assess new approaches in high-throughput purification and analytical technologies. Propose and implement new initiatives/directions for the team.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientific standards and safe laboratory practices.
  • Keep accurate and current records of research and/or project related activities according to AbbVie policies.

Qualifications

Position will be hired based on level of experience.

  • BS or MS in Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or related fields with 2+ years (MS); or 5+ years (BS) of job-related experience.
  • Hands-on experience with analytical and preparative scale HPLC and LC-MS
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot a variety of analytical and preparative instrumentation hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and the ability to communicate effectively with high-throughput chemistry team.
  • Proven effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with scientists and engineers.

Preferred

  • Experience of working in a fast-paced enabling technologies group and communicating effectively with Medicinal Chemistry teams.
  • Experience in developing workflows for high-throughput chemistry analysis and purification.
  • Experience with instrument development, automation, and/or programming.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
