Job Description

The R&D Technician carries out daily activities in the vivarium and will need to be proficient in humane rodent and dog handling skills, dosing by oral gavage, intravenous, and intraperitoneal routes, bleeding from the tail vein, assessing health, and performing humane euthanasia. The ideal candidate will also have postmortem examination (necropsy) experience. There are opportunities for expanding the candidate’s responsibilities beyond those identified as core job responsibilities. At all times, the candidate must adhere to the highest standards of animal welfare and personal conduct consistent with Abbvie values.

The candidate will also be required to utilize a computer system to record all activities and observations. Ability to design, plan, organize and implement tasks within an allotted timeframe. Basic competence of Excel Spreadsheets, word processing, and email and knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems. The candidate will be required to work with potentially hazardous compounds, using appropriate precautions for the safety of the candidate and co-workers, and to prepare dosing formulations.

Must be able to concisely communicate key issues to stakeholders, interact and communicate effectively with peers, animal husbandry staff, veterinary staff, toxicologists, and collaborating scientists.

Once the training period is completed, the candidate will be required to work independently on weekend days on an as needed basis.


Qualifications

Educational Experience:

  • R&D Tech III: High School Diploma and 3+ years’ experience in laboratory animal field, or AS/BS and 1+ year experience. Or ALAT certification with High School Diploma and 1+ year experience, or ALAT with AS/BS degree.
  • R&D Tech II: ALAT certification with High School Diploma and 5+ years’ experience in laboratory animal field, or ALAT with AS/BS and 3+ years’ experience. Or LAT certification with High School Diploma and 3+ years’ experience, or LAT with AS/BS and 1+ year experience.
  • R&D Tech I: ALAT certification with High School Diploma and 7+ years’ experience in laboratory animal field, or ALAT with AS/BS and 5+ years’ experience. Or LAT certification with High School Diploma and 5+ years’ experience, or LAT with AS/BS and 3+ years’ experience.

Position will be filled at level commensurate with extent of education, experience, and accomplishment. R&D Technician III, R&D Technician II, or R&D Technician I

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
