Job Description

The Medical TA Lead Immunology leads the assigned therapeutic area medical team, setting and executing medical affairs TA strategy for the affiliate medical TA team. They ensure the TA medical teams contributes valuable, strategic input to local and global brand plans and maintains and builds a medical affairs organization including infield medical aligned with affiliate requirements. They provide proactive and strategic input to cross-functional affiliate teams and affiliate management team (AMT) as requested, driving medical excellence and inspiring the co-creation of innovative solutions through internal and external partnerships,

The Medical TA Lead also ensures that the medical department is fully integrated in cross-functional teams (e.g., brand teams) to support the strategy and execution of affiliate priorities, while being functionally independent, while ensuring adherence to applicable company standards, policies, and procedures, and instilling, and operates within a culture of ethical and compliant behavior.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Leadership, line management and development of the medical staff under leadership.  
  • Act as contact point for GMA/Area medical interactions/activities for respective IMM TAs.
  • Develop and maintain in depth knowledge for assigned products / relevant IMM therapeutic areas through attendance / participation at key internal meetings/training sessions, relevant congresses, and seminars and by regular self-study of the national/Area literature.
  • Operate as a scientific interface and resource to HCPs/Customer(s), Health Care Institutions, External Experts, and professional associations regarding assigned AbbVie Products or Products in Development (rheumatology, gastroenterology, gastroenterology).
  • Provide input, as required, into the development of product  or IMM TA specific strategic medical affairs plans for the affiliate IMM medical department and local commercial plans; collaborate and partner with local business partners to ensure that medical activities for assigned products/therapeutic areas are aligned with local business-related strategic plans.
  • Ensure training is delivered to internal stakeholders (Brand team members, in-field team) based on relevant medical/pre-launch plans
  • Support IMM Research Activities.
  • Ensure collaboration with CSM team on common activities.
  • Ensure collaboration of IMM medical staff in the preparation and review of IMM promotional material; ensure the medical/scientific content is correct and fully compliant with Abbvie’s internal policies and guidelines.
  • Act as final approver (functional/financial) of medical projects
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable national laws and regulations, guidelines, codes of conduct, AbbVie’s policies and procedures and accepted standards of best practice.
  • Ensure medical/scientific strategic input and operational support of core activities such as local clinical research, HCP/Customer interactions, generation and communication of clinical and scientific data, educational initiatives and patient safety for IMM assigned products/therapeutic areas.
  • Ensure medical input in PLN/LRP and other business processes.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.

Qualifications

  • MD (or equivalent scientific degree) with more than 5 years medical affairs experience working in a pharmaceutical industry. Suitably qualified individuals from a scientific background and relevant experience will also be considered in exceptional circumstances.  Previous medical affairs pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical industry experience is essential, and management experience of medical teams & significant numbers of medical/scientific staff for 5 years (minimum) or matrix leadership experience is expected. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead a medical/scientific organization.
  • Experience with medical brand leadership and core elements of medical affairs deliverables: EE engagement, medical education, congress presence, publications and research, Real World Evidence and MSL/Field leadership.
  • Proven leadership skills in a cross-functional environment. Track record of producing results in a matrix setting on time and in budget.
  • Experience interacting both externally and internally to support Affiliate or Area business strategy. Keen interest in developing and maintaining expert knowledge for assigned therapeutic area/product and in medical research in general.
  • Knowledge of health care environment, patient needs, market access, and reimbursement issues. Excellent written and spoken communication and presentation skills.
  • Fluency in written and oral English is highly desirable to facilitate communications between the affiliate medical department, Area and Global Medical Affairs and other international AbbVie representatives.
