Job Description

JOB SUMMARY 

Lead affiliate medical team and supervise activities of the relevant Therapeutic Area (TA). Work effectively across the matrix, develop and proactively communicate a clear medical position and partner with people and teams while driving to results. Co-create TA strategy with other functions. Ensure adherence to applicable company standards, policies and procedures. Instill, and operate with a culture of ethical and compliant behavior. Possess an array of influencing skills with high emotional intelligence and interpersonal savvy. Can lead and inspire teams inside and outside of own organization to deliver on business priorities. Provide medical expert advice and guidance to key stakeholders, including scientific exchange and professional relationship development with key thought leaders / external experts. Accountable for the affiliate medical TA team budget. Provide leadership, strategic direction and mentorship to direct reports, and fulfill line management responsibilities accordingly. Effectively identify and develop internal talent.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide Leadership, line management and development of the affiliate’s medical TA team. 
  • Responsible for recruiting, retaining, and mentoring high potential direct reporting employees.  In conjunction with the Affiliate Medical Director and local HR ensure that talent management and succession planning activities are undertaken.
  • Set and execute Medical TA Affairs strategies for the affiliate to ensure alignment with local, regional and global strategic plans. 
  • Development of local clinical research plans in the relevant TA. 
  • Provide medical/scientific input into marketing strategy and key commercial initiatives, as required. Monitor the environment for competitive intelligence (e.g. product strategies, studies, commercial messages, positioning, etc.) and communicate, where appropriate, within the Company.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable company standards, policies and procedures among affiliate medical staff.  Ensure compliance with all training requirements for staff.
  • Maintain credible and productive relationships with a variety of audiences including government regulators, the scientific community and other key stakeholders.

BUSINESS IMPACT

  • Strategic Planning for the affiliate medical TA group, ensuring that affiliate medical TA staff contribute valuable strategic input to cross-functional plans; collaborate and partner with local business partners to ensure that medical TA activities are aligned with local business-related strategic plans, as well as those of Regional and Global Medical Affairs.
  • Ensure that local medical affairs implementation plans for assigned products / therapeutic areas are executed efficiently,
  • Provide leadership, line management and development for the direct reports.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable national laws and regulations, guidelines, codes of conduct, AbbVie standards, policies and procedures and for a better understanding of the compliance requirements of the affiliate medical TA team.
  • Plan and manage the medical expenses and study budget for the affiliate medical TA team.
  • Operate as a scientific interface and resource to HCPs/Customer(s), Health Care Institutions, External Experts, and professional associations regarding assigned therapeutic area product & disease. 
  • Responsible for the provision of specialist medical/scientific strategic input and operational support of core activities such as local clinical research, HCP/Customer interactions, generation and communication of clinical and scientific data, educational initiatives and patient safety for assigned products / therapeutic areas.

Qualifications

KNOW HOW & WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Advanced scientific degree (ideally MD, PharmD or PhD in relevant field) and with minimum of 2+ years of strong clinical background including medical affairs experience in a biopharma or pharma environment.
  • Prior experience in solid tumors and preferably in Ovarian Cancer.
  • Experience in Companion Diagnostics.
  • Leading others including creating flexible environment in which all employees are empowered to deliver their best performance.
  • Demonstration of business acumen to act as a business partner, allocating resources to maximize impact and making smart tradeoff decisions.
  • Experience with long range plan development in alignment with strategic initiatives. Experience in leading product launch teams is desired.
  • Ability to build and lead a medical team of significant complexity. Leads as a role model of high ethics and integrity, representing the scientific community.

SKILLS

  • Scientific expertise in the relevant TA
  • Medical leadership of a process or asset. Demonstrated intellectual horsepower to rapidly assimilate new knowledge of disease areas.
  • Highly skilled in working collaboratively across an organization in addition to key external stakeholders and the healthcare community at large.
  • Understanding local market access, regulatory environment and evidence needs driving the asset value proposition to cover the gaps identified cross-functionally.
  • Understanding business planning processes with track record of producing results in a cross-functional matrix setting on time and in budget.
  • Advanced communication skills.
