Job Description

*Hybrid (3x per week onsite) in Waltham, MA preferred. Will consider remote candidates.

*Position title will be based on qualifications listed below.

Purpose

Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of marketed products and a promising oncology pipeline.

AbbVie is seeking an exceptional Ocular Medical Director/ Scientific Director, Medical Affairs (ELAHERE) in Oncology to provide expertise in the prevention and multidisciplinary management of corneal events associated with targeted cancer therapies.  This individual will engage with internal stakeholders and with external eye care professionals, oncologists and nursing professionals to inform a patient-centric strategy that will improve the care experience for patients and multidisciplinary medical teams.

Responsibilities

  • The Ocular Medical Director/ Scientific Director, Medical Affairs (ELAHERE) will be responsible for establishing and delivering a comprehensive medical strategy for management of ocular events related to targeted cancer therapies and will be accountable for the execution of key functional deliverables.  This individual will:
    • Develop medical affairs strategy for Elahere to support multidisciplinary health care teams in understanding, preventing, and managing ocular events.
    • Stay abreast of professional information and technology through conferences and/or medical literature and act as a therapeutic area resource.
    • Represent Ocular Medical Affairs in designated cross-functional Oncology teams across the organization, as needed.
    • Manage expert optometric and ophthalmic KOL relationships.
    • Execute on key medical functional deliverables aligned to ocular medical strategy, including but not limited to:
      • Evidence generation for relevant evidence gaps,
      • Internal and external medical education on ocular events and antibody drug conjugates,
      • Insight generation through advisory boards and EE engagements
      • Ophthalmic congress strategy including external presence, expert engagements and digital initiatives
      • Oncology congress support with TA partnership, as needed
      • Synthesis of insights from various stakeholders related to ocular events, partnering with MSLs and other team members as a subject matter expert to ensure that key insights are not overlooked
      • Medical review of scientific publications, as needed
      • Medical promotional review for ocular materials, as needed.
    • Provide scientific/medical education to investigators, clinical monitors, and Global Project Team members related to therapeutic area or disease specific information as needed.
    • Participate in design and execution of clinical trial safety, product safety and risk management plans. May review, assess and report applicable Adverse Events (AE’s) and Serious Adverse Events (SAE’s) if assigned to AbbVie conduct on clinical studies.
    • Assist in the development of scientifically accurate marketing materials in accordance with established policies and practice standards, including regulatory guidelines to meet customer needs.

 


Qualifications

Medical Director Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.), Medical Doctorate (M.D.) degree or equivalent (D.O. or non-US equivalent of M.D) with expertise in the ocular anterior segment is required. Experience caring for oncology treatment related ocular adverse events is preferred. Completion of residency and/or fellowship is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of medical affairs experience in the pharmaceutical industry or equivalent. 3+ years of experience is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of the eye care clinical landscape, including collaborative care practice patterns between eye care professionals and other health care providers
  • Knowledge of clinical trial methodology, data analysis and interpretation, regulatory requirements governing clinical trials and experience in development strategy and the design of protocols.
  • Must possess strong leadership skills, ability to influence without authority in cross-functional teams, ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to interact externally and internally to support global business strategy.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Must be able to travel, including ability to travel overnight and occasionally on weekends.

Scientific Director Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree PhD or PharmD with expertise in the ocular anterior segment is required. Additional post doctorate experience highly preferred. Experience with oncology treatment related to ocular adverse events is preferred.
  • 10-15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry or equivalent; substantial understanding of relevant therapeutic area (ophthalmology) required. 5-10 years of experience in Medical Affairs with Global Ophthalmic Medical Affairs experience highly preferred. 
  • Knowledge of clinical trial methodology, data analysis and interpretation, regulatory requirements governing clinical trials and experience in development strategy and the design of protocols.
  • Must possess strong leadership skills, ability to influence without authority in cross-functional teams, ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Must be able to travel, including ability to travel overnight and occasionally on weekends.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​
