Job Description

The main objectives of this team are:

  1. Ensure TA strategies are pulled through with quality execution and impact delivery.
  2. Execute Cross-Functional Strategic Projects that require MA Leadership
  3. Core member of Cross-Functional Strategic Projects requiring MA contribution which are not indication/asset specific
  4. Build Strategic Advocacy Groups Engagement Plans and Execution ensuring impact measurement
  5. Build and lead cross-functionally the Scientific External Collaboration Group ensuring we create long term scientific partnerships with the top research institutions
  6. Ensure all oncology teams are executing with the same standards and approach including delivery of congress content

Details:

Oncology Strategy:

  • Ensure TA strategies are pulled through with quality execution and impact delivery.
  • Execute Cross-Functional Strategic Projects that require MA Leadership
  • Be core member of Cross-Functional Strategic Projects requiring MA contribution where we are not the lead and are not indication/asset specific
  • Owns 3-year roadmap and 1-year priorities
  • Proactive assessment of ONC operating model, and identifies areas that need to evolve/change
  • Work closely with indication teams and MABI to ensure proper above brand segmentation and pull through of needed medical market research
  • Conceptualize, develop, and execute impact measurement capabilities and tools to monitor, measure, and analyze performance/impact of Medical Affairs team strategy and execution across stakeholders within a specified indication.
  • Work side-by-side with the Oncology SLT to define most pressing issues facing the TA in the short term and long term.
  • Work with cross-functional partners to align on highest-priority functional challenges and collaboratively to develop solutions and provide strategic direction to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Bring rigorous conceptual thinking to answer key questions across functions for AbbVie leveraging internal and external intelligence and resources as required.

Cross-Oncology Standards/Congress Content

  • Ensures consistency and overall strategy across oncology in functional/tactical planning
  • Develops and oversees the execution of a strategic oncology congress annual plan.
  • Maximizing the impact of Abbvie’s oncology external MedEd activities including but not limited to congress related activities and symposia.
  • Ensures consistency in execution of tactics across teams including Advisory Boards, Congress activities/Medical Booths, etc. 
  • Leads process improvement and standardization recommendations for Medical Review across oncology and is accountable for the medical review of complex advertising and promotional materials for cross-oncology stakeholders.

Advocacy Groups Partnerships/Engagements:

  • Oversee Advocacy Groups partnership and engagement
  • Ensure a strategic approach to these collaborations aligned with brand and medical strategies as well as measuring impact of various types of engagements

External Scientific Collaborations:

  • Oversee the external scientific engagement efforts
  • Ensure a roadmap is created and executed on to allow collaboration with the top institutions/groups in the US and globally

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MD, PhD, DO) with relevant therapeutic specialty in an academic or hospital environment highly preferred. Relevant therapeutic area clinical experience and/or Medical Affairs in an academic, hospital or pharma environment required.
  • National license to practice medicine with relevant therapeutic specialty in an academic or hospital environment. Academic qualification (Dr med or equal) is strongly preferred. Completion of residency and/or fellowship is preferred. Advanced academic qualification is warranted.
  • Typically 8 years of clinical trial or medical affairs experience in the pharmaceutical industry or academia or equivalent.
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical trial methodology, regulatory requirements governing clinical trials and experience in development strategy and the design of protocols. Expert knowledge in a relevant therapeutic specialty. Must have basic understanding of Pharmacovigilance practices for Clinical Development programs. Must have an in-depth understanding of clinical development process for Phase 1-IV or extensive knowledge of medical affairs including compliance and regulatory requirements.

Key Characteristics of Head:

  • Deep Oncology TA experience
  • Senior level leader to enable cross-functional senior level partnerships and influence across commercial, development, clinical operations, and OED.
  • Ability to assess/predict project delivery with impact vs project delivery milestones and pivot accordingly during the course of delivery if needed.
  • Able to provide expert guidance and coaching to both direct reports and cross-functional partners in how to maneuver/change course to be able to achieve that value.
  • Track record of success in managing change, cross-functional partnership building and delivery with success. 
  • Highly Credible MA professional
  • Executive Presence

 

Key Characteristic of Oncology Strategy Lead/Sr Director:

  • Demonstrates organizational partnership and influence across various external and internal
  • Analytical Skills with the ability to synthesize/propose solutions for complex projects
  • Preferable prior experience in other functions (e.g. commercial, development, innovations … etc)
  • Strong sense of urgency and ability to influence diverse leader profiles
  • Creative, innovative thinker with strong strategic mindset and decision making
  • Adaptability and flexibility to switch between projects and priorities
  • Oncology TA experience preferable but not a must.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​
