Government Affairs Director - Belux
Reporting to the General Manager – Belux
Position Overview:
Lead the Government Affairs (GA) function to deliver impactful Government Affairs strategies in alignment with AbbVie brand and corporate priorities, which positively shape our external environment and support sustainable patient access to medicines. Build AbbVie’s external profile among key policy and political stakeholders, utilize effective internal networks across the business and ensure quality output. Further support the Belux Affiliate by being a member of the Senior Management Team and contribute to key strategic decisions.
Highlighted Responsibilities:
- Define, develop and own AbbVie Belux’s corporate and Government Affairs/Policy strategy.
- Build and maintain strong political and policy advocacy networks, creating consensus on key policy areas and drive healthcare and life sciences prioritization at both national level.
- Ensure AbbVie is developing robust, transparent and effective working relationships with Government, Policy Makers, Civil Servants, Special Advisers, Think Tanks, Research Organizations, ....
- Participate in AbbVie’s representation at Industry Trade Associations (Pharma.be, AmCham), ensuring we maximize our impact, drive strategic alignment and secure strong share of voice on issues affecting our operating environment.
- Provide strategic political counsel to the affiliate GM and Belux Leadership Team – ensuring that the business is kept well-informed of all relevant political and industry developments.
- Supervise the development of AbbVie position papers and key policy messaging, as well as lead the development of responses to Government consultations.
- Responsible for horizon scanning and ensuring AbbVie maintains effective policy and legislative monitoring services in place, which help to identify opportunities and mitigate against risks.
- Work closely with other functions such as External Affairs, Market Access, Medical and Commercial to build networks, understanding and close partnerships with key decision makers and leverage influence through aligned strategies and engagement platforms that make a valuable contribution to healthcare delivery in AbbVie’s areas of focus
- Masters degree in Public Health, Political Science, Economics, Communication, Business or similar
- Demonstrated success in the influencing of Belux legislation and policy
- Extensive knowledge of the healthcare environment, including deep knowledge of payer and provider mechanisms, the political systems, funding flows, and legislation affecting pharmaceutical products
- Skilled in providing political counsel
- Proven track record in building strong strategic alliances
- Ability to drive complex cross-functional collaboration
- Fluent English, French and Dutch

Where We Work
Role is primarily site- or office-based but can occasionally be performed remotely. Employees who are site/office-based and can occasionally perform their role virtually work both in the office and remotely*, following the policies and regulations in place at their location. US Employees must be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Three days in the office is the minimum; some individuals or teams may require more in-office days due to meetings, business/project needs or their role.
