This position is a leadership role responsible for providing overall direction, process management, and organizational leadership for the Project Management Portfolio Planning function.
- Responsible for defining strategic direction of the Portfolio Planning function and fostering strong collaboration between Planners and Portfolio Program Managers. Leads Project Planners to ensure up to date asset level timelines and reporting. Accountable for directing the project planners to ensure that Asset Team timelines reflect asset strategy and current status. Provides mentorship and training to project planners for scenario analysis and associated analytics for asset plans. Provides oversight to ensure asset dashboard reports are timely and accurate which are used for executive management decision-making.
- Lead cross functional complex initiatives across R&D to enhance project management and project planning across the Enterprise. Drives process improvements in timeline management, scenario planning and critical path across all functions.
- Develop, champion, and implement processes and tools to support the Project Management Functions across the R&D organization to effectively deliver against the organization’s strategic and financial plans. Foster strategic initiatives to streamline reporting practices cross-functionally across R&D.
- Collaborate with appropriate functions (e.g. Development, Med Affairs, Disc, Regulatory, etc) to align asset and functional level schedules and resources expended to support LBE, Budget, and Portfolio cycles in the portfolio planning tool. Apply project management. best practices to the creation, maintenance, and improvement of project planning tools and templates for control, monitoring, and continual improvement across all of RR&D. Interface directly with clients and management to address strategic plans for planning tools, templates and enhancements.
- Act as a catalyst to remove org barriers for cross-functional initiative success (e.g. planning transparency across R&R&D data harmonization, etc). Provide mentoring and leadership in project management best practices to dept staff. Establish and enforce planning philosophy and standards. Build R&D capabilities to significantly enhance planning software solutions. Balance tradeoffs between system and process, define decision rights and roles, and build domain specific system skills within department.
- Use advanced knowledge of industry data, advanced planning, problem solving and critical thinking skills to resolve business problems that align to organizational strategies. Ensure high quality data and on time delivery of global project, and pipeline information reports to various financial & governance bodies within R&D. Foster the use of industry standards and models for the collection andcanalysis of data and metrics. View data trends/problems and challenges holistically considering impact across functional boundaries.
- Work with Director and VPs across R&D to develop and recommend alternatives that support strategic plans and initiatives involving portfolio planning. Synthesize organizational issues and causes to make cross-functional recommendations. Establish and direct project auditing process and schedule to ensure adherence to planning standards. Develop a sustainable capacity for change - prioritizing requests and managing planning system changes. Utilize metrics to analyze effective use of planning system that minimizes human error, maximizes value and accelerates business performance.
- Responsible for defining strategic direction, management and optimization of technology for global integrated solutions to support drug dev planning, tracking resource management, and reporting across the R&D portfolio via a central project planning and information repository. Stay abreast of new technology and be able to relate them to current and emerging PM business needs. Interface directly with clients and management to address strategic plans for software issues and enhancements.
- Apply strategic oversight for best practices in the creation, maintenance, and improvement of the project planning processes to ensure that proper data is captured for control, monitoring, and continual improvement. Direct and lead cross-functional teams across R&D to improve centralized project planning, tracking, and reporting while mitigating risk. Develop and deliver best practices to R&D and Abbvie in support of drug development processes; evaluate and update best practices to optimize effectiveness.
- Frequent interaction across R&D with VPs, Directors and line function management to coordinate collaboration and foster global project planning and tracking system and process improvements. Delivery of training programs to support Planners, Drug Development PMs and Functions with project planning, tracking, resource management, and project information reporting. Direct, develop, motivate and coach staff. Foster and sustain a challenging, inclusive and rewarding work environment w where talent is developed and diversified.

- Bachelors degree required, preferably in a technical, scientific or project management related discipline and 13+ years professional work experience, preferably in project management, system based processes, or the pharmaceutical or biotech industry; or Masters degree with 11+ years of work experience; or Doctorate degree with 9+ years of work experience in same disciplines.
- Accreditation in a project management or process improvement discipline highly preferred (e.g. Project Management Professional, LEAN Six Sigma, etc.).
- 6+ years Project Management experience, including leadership of a cross-functional team required. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of project management principles.
Ability to work independently and represent sound strategies is required. - Must have clear leadership skills that minimally include: strong written and effective interpersonal communication; capability to clearly present, influence, and logically justify proposals; sound judgment; negotiation and conflict management; effective communication across cultures and disciplines; relationship building and fostering teamwork; and training experience.
- Job requires knowledge of the drug development process.
Cross-functional and global project team leadership experience preferred. - Proficient in the tools and techniques of Project Management and /or Business Excellence. Excellent technology skills (e.g., MS Office software, MS Project, Qlikview, Spotfire, etc.) required.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
