Our talented, highly creative team puts AbbVie in the best position to excel.  The Director, Oncology Patient Advocacy, is responsible for ensuring the patient voice and perspective is at the center of driving strategic direction across the AbbVie Oncology portfolio through developing strategic partnerships with patient and professional organizations. This position resides within AbbVie’s Oncology Business Unit Capabilities and Operations Team.

Description

As the patient insight expert across the portfolio, this position will serve as the U.S. commercial face of AbbVie to patient advocacy organizations, external alliances and professional medical associations.  This leadership role is responsible for developing, implementing and leading an internal team to position AbbVie in Oncology as a preferred partner for influential US patient and professional organizations within the hematology and solid tumor therapeutic areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a commercial patient engagement strategy to deepen and diversify engagement with US patient and professional organizations aligned with AbbVie’s Oncology Portfolio. Partner across multiple functions to drive clarity and consistency in AbbVie Oncology’s external engagement with these organizations.
  • Lead the US Oncology Patient Advocacy team, motivating team around shared goals and vision. Accountable for overall structure, organizational design, and resource management.
  • Oversee creation of overarching brand strategy advocacy plans by the team, aligning with brand strategic imperatives for pre-approval, launch and commercialization to deepen understanding of disease awareness gaps, access and reimbursement barriers, post marketing surveillance, adherence and persistency challenges, pathway education, shared-decision making tools and psychosocial resource needs for patients.
  • Define and standardize best practices in patient advocacy based on a clear understanding of the patient experience.  Design and create processes, systems, solutions and tools that will contribute to the effectiveness and success of the overall patient advocacy engagement plan and achieve business objectives.
  • Elevate patient and caregiver perspective to ensure a patient centric approach across the portfolio.
  • Educate internal teams on the critical role of patient advocacy and professional organizations in the care and treatment of Oncology patients. Ensure internal teams understand the scope, accountabilities and ways of working with the Commercial Advocacy function for specific disease areas of interest in the US.
  • Acquire feedback and perspective from patients, caregivers, medical professionals, policy makers and others within the patient support community.  Apply gained insights to business decisions related to addressing patient needs and providing impactful solutions and services that will support them.
  • Remain current of new developments in US regulatory, legal, policy and social media that have an impact on the function and portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline, advanced degree preferred (MD, MBA, JD, PharmD, etc.)
  • Minimum 7-10 years of patient advocacy experience required. Oncology disease experience required.
  • Prior experience either working with or working for patient advocacy organizations and related groups.  Must have a broad network of established relationships with oncology advocacy groups in the US
  • Must have the ability to effectively collaborate with, motivate and influence various levels/grades within the organization and outside of the organization.
  • Must possess ability to gather needs from various stakeholders and translate into concrete and meaningful initiatives to benefit Oncology patients and caregivers
  • Knowledge of marketing, strategic and long-range planning, training, and/or market access
  • Excellent analytical, verbal, written, and presentation communication skills. Adept at creating and communicating a clear vision and purpose
  • People leadership experience with multiple direct reports required
  • Proven ability to drive pragmatic solutions to problems preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 30% to 50% of the time; domestic and limited international

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​
