Job Description

As Director II of Global Alliances, you will work with Immunology therapeutic area leaders to define pipeline and partnering strategies for AbbVie.  You will maintain a portfolio and champion programs governed by alliance agreements between AbbVie and our external partners with a focus on jointly advancing drug discovery, development, and commercialization of medicines that bring remarkable impact to patients. You will partner with leaders across AbbVie, be a high performing team member who exemplifies an interest and expertise in the biopharma industry, demonstrate strong desire to define and advance AbbVie’s strategic agenda and lead all alliance-related activities in support of AbbVie’s partnered pipeline.  Once well established, you will have opportunities to develop and lead the Global Alliances Immunology Team within AbbVie’s Corporate Business & Strategy Office (CBSO).

The Global Alliances group provides a high profile and high impact experience for team members. The Director II will leverage their scientific and business acumen to drive alignment on the overarching therapeutic area strategy, provide input on business development and therapeutic area pipeline initiatives, lead the alliance and all business aspects of partnered programs and make robust recommendations to senior leadership to best position the therapeutic area partnered pipeline for success.

The successful candidate for this position will support defining ABBV Immunology therapeutic area strategy, support due diligence and business development activities when assessing and negotiating potential future partnerships, and liaise with AbbVie’s internal business development, R&D, and Commercial governance to execute pipeline strategy. This individual will work within a cross-matrix team setting composed of both internal and external partners. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Once established, serve as the Global Alliances Team Lead for the Immunology Therapeutic Area, including working collaboratively with therapeutic area leaders to execute business development and pipeline strategies.
  2. You will have oversight of AbbVie’s Immunology alliances and team, including responsibility for administering and developing the Global Alliances Immunology therapeutic area personnel.
  3. Lead a portfolio of high-value strategic alliances, including translating strategic vision for the alliances into action and serving as AbbVie’s business leader for all aspects of the partnership.
  4. Act as advocate for the alliance, resolving conflicts and collaborating cross-functionally to facilitate relationships between the partners.
  5. As required per agreement and business need, lead risk-appropriate diligence, coordinate team alignment, and make strategic recommendations on partnered assets to senior leaders.
  6. Drive the agendas and execute governance meetings between internal and external partners.
  7. Support AbbVie’s business development strategy and operations as appropriate.
  8. Support AbbVie’s corporate partnership events to build and strengthen external relationships with existing and future partners.
  9. Establish and promote best partnering practices to gain competitive advantage and establish AbbVie as partner-of-choice.
  10. Drive executive-level discussions to influence complex business decisions and effectively collaborate cross-functionally to deliver business results.
  11. Partner with VP and executive level stakeholders, acting as a thought-partner on key business decisions that impact the current and future state of AbbVie.

Qualifications

  • Advanced scientific degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, or PhD-MD) with a focus on Immunology strongly preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in pharmaceutical development or commercialization.
  • Strong executive presence, business acumen, critical reasoning, and ability to frame and communicate complex recommendations and decisions is highly valued.
  • Experience working with external partners. Ability to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate and negotiate with individuals and groups internally and externally.
  • Experience managing large projects within a complex matrixed organization either as an external consultant or internal cross-functional lead to influence and align stakeholders.
  • Experience with various business development deal models, including option-based models.
  • Requires thorough understanding of the research, development, and commercialization of new drugs through past experiences and a good grounding in scientific, development, regulatory and commercial concepts in both early and late-stage development programs.
  • Must demonstrate critical analytic thinking for conflict resolution; risk management; organizational alignment; and develop and present strategic proposals to executive leadership teams that will lead to better business outcomes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously and competing priorities.
  • Familiarity with legal and contractual governance.
  • Basic financial literacy, with quantitative and modeling skills and ability to distill complex information.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
