Director II, Clinical Field Excellence steers the strategic direction and elevates the performance of Clinical Site Management (CSM)’s clinical field activities globally, driving continuous innovation and improvement, ensuring that AbbVie remains at the forefront of the industry. This individual will foster a culture of excellence in the field, ensuring that the organization’s clinical field operations are aligned with best practices and industry standards.
This position reports to the Senior Director, Head of Clinical Field Excellence and Site Centricity.
This role will collaborate with key cross-functional stakeholders including but not limited to the CSM Leadership Team, Medical Affairs globally, Business Insights/Study Feasibility/Patient Recruitment, Global, Area & Country CSM teams, and CDO stakeholders to achieve and drive the vision.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Vision:
- Lead and inspire the Clinical Field Excellence team (direct reports) as well as influence global field teams, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement to achieve industry-leading standards and results.
- Establish and articulate a strategic vision for the Clinical Field organization, enabling it to become an industry leader.
Strategic Development:
- Develop and implement high-impact strategies to enhance the performance, productivity and impact of field-based CSM teams globally.
- Drive the creation and standardization of field clinical interaction planning and engagement (bi-directional between global, Area, country, site), ensuring consistency and effectiveness across all therapeutic and global activities.
Field Excellence Innovation and Initiatives:
- Champion innovation and continuous learning within the Field Clinical organization, embracing new ideas and fostering an environment open to suggestions and improvements
- Establish and optimize standards, processes, tools, and resources to maximize Field Clinical Excellence, improving trial end-to-end activities (e.g. site identification, recruitment, and enrollment) in AbbVie studies.
- Collaborate with Field Development and Area CSM on training strategy and delivery.
Compliance and Quality:
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of regulatory, quality, and compliance standards, ensuring AbbVie's Field Clinical operations align with evolving requirements and industry guidelines.
- Ensure the Field Clinical operating model and standards remain compliant and ahead of industry trends.
Insights and Metrics:
- Continuously evolve Field Clinical Insights capabilities, ensuring the delivery of high-quality and impactful insights to inform strategic decisions.
- Design and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to quantify and communicate the performance and impact of the Field Clinical operations.
Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (Clinical Study Leadership, CSM global/Area/Country team, Medical Affairs, Legal, OEC) to align global Field Clinical activities with corporate standards and goals.
- Lead global cross-functional teams to identify and realize synergistic opportunities, ensuring integrated field clinical operations that align with broader AbbVie business objectives.
AI, Systems and Reporting:
- Drives AI innovation and adoption for CSM, incorporating solutions in support of pipeline acceleration, quality and team productivity.
- Define and implement global business and reporting requirements for Field Clinical systems, ensuring they meet compliance and regulatory standards while simplifying global engagement planning and execution.
People Leadership and Elevating the Bar on Performance:
- Attracts, retains and develops Clinical Field Excellent team to business objectives and become the next generation of talent.
- For the direct team, coaches and develops, clearly establishes and communicates goals, uses objective means to monitor progress towards those goals, offers clear, direct, and timely feedback, and provides training, direction, and support while fostering a team atmosphere.
- Maintain a Field Clinical training curriculum based on needs assessment, enhancing communication, business acumen, and other critical skills.
Professionalism and Integrity:
- Upholds organizational values and demonstrates sound business ethics, works with integrity and ethics in all situations, and always treats others with respect and consideration. Takes responsibility for actions, reacts well under pressure, follows through on commitments, and demonstrates consistency between words and actions.
- Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degree preferred. Degree in Business or Life Science required.
- Relevant experience (minimum of 12 years; 15+ years preferred) in the pharmaceutical/biotech setting and/or relevant clinical research organization. A minimum of 8-11 years of experience in related area required, with a minimum of 5 years field clinical experience. Field clinical leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of legal and regulatory environment of pharmaceutical industry, specifically related to Field Clinical roles.
- Strong tactical familiarity with clinical site management activities (e.g., clinical site monitoring, site management) to be able to translate strategy to execution. Familiarity with affiliate One R&D model collaboration and AbbVie’s capabilities (e.g., site engagement, country & site feasibility, RDBM, etc.) preferred
- Must exhibit strategic thought and leadership with the ability to think and lead at the big picture level as well as the ability to translate strategic objectives into specific initiatives and manage successful execution
- Proven track record of working in a matrix environment, strong teamwork skills, leading cross functional teams, timely decision making and results orientation in meeting project, department and business objectives. Builds strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of team to enable higher performance.
- Creative, innovative thinker with strong strategic mindset and understanding the strategic value of working with external experts and robustly integrating them into AbbVie strategic objectives.
- Raises the bar and challenges the status quo. Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement. Embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation and manages innovation to reality.

- Strong collaboration, coaching/ mentoring, leadership, people management, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Experience successfully leveraging business analytics to inform decisions.

Pay Range: $
182000 - 346000 USD
Where We Work
Role is primarily site- or office-based but can occasionally be performed remotely. Employees who are site/office-based and can occasionally perform their role virtually work both in the office and remotely*, following the policies and regulations in place at their location. US Employees must be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Three days in the office is the minimum; some individuals or teams may require more in-office days due to meetings, business/project needs or their role.
