Job Description

*Preferred location is Lake County, IL, but can sit remote anywhere in the U.S.

The Director of Field Medical Learning, Development, and Culture is accountable for setting the strategy, establishing, and ensuring the execution of the capabilities associated with onboarding and continuous learning, culture enhancement, and leadership development for AbbVie medical field teams and field leadership.  This includes the responsibility to design, implement and proactively drive enhancements to the Field Medical training curriculum. The Director of Field Medical Learning, Development and Culture will lead a team, ensuring the successful execution of the Learning & Development curriculum.  The incumbent will collaborate cross-functionally with all levels of USMA Leadership and other SMEs to drive Field and Field Leadership professional development and culture related initiatives across the Medical Affairs & HEOR Community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Sr Director of Field Excellence, this position will be responsible for providing vision, leadership and strategic direction for the development, maintenance and improvement of learning excellence and professional development for medical field teams and field Leadership, as well as, the responsibility of overseeing the successful delivery of cross-functional medical field learning solutions.
  • They will be accountable to drive excellence in learning through the development, execution, and oversight of effective learning & development solutions. The position is also accountable to provide learning expertise, including implementation of new and innovative methods which incorporate adult learning principles. To drive successful adoption/embedding of various learning and training programs.
  • They will oversee a training team responsible for the implementation and facilitation of Field Medical onboarding curricula and professional development curricula, coordinating appropriately to ensure compliance and operational standards become enterprise norms. They will collaborate with business unit TA and field leads to identify training needs and develop targeted training solutions to address those needs.
  • Ideal candidate will demonstrate ability to lead teams, manage vendor partners/contractors, and influence without authority.
  • Building effective relationships to work collaboratively with Senior Leadership, Cross-functional partners, TA personnel and other groups leading Abbvie learning initiatives to drive performance through consistent development and delivery of training, development, and culture related content.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of Field Medical professional development strategic training plan, including strategic goals & objectives to drive development and learning excellence.
  • Establish standards/innovation in onboarding, ongoing professional development, and leadership development.  Define, implement, and support the most effective professional development practices by maintaining awareness of and setting trends in instructional practice, technology, instructional models, educational issues, etc. and by understanding their implications.
  • Proactively and collaboratively identify opportunities to harmonize and drive enhancement across the MA field organization.
  • Strategic thinker who anticipates issues, identifies solutions, and translates into action. Able to identify gaps, diagnose needs and develop solutions.
  • Able to design, develop, direct and influence organizational field medical professional development and career mapping strategies.

Qualifications

Experience/Key Attributes:

PREFERRED:

  • Industry experience in healthcare or pharmaceutical business with adult learning/organizational change/leadership development for field medical.
  • Successful people leader experienced in training with demonstrated ability to lead without authority.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Medical Affairs and the Field Medical role, including acceptable practices and constraining regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in strategic planning, execution and assessment of applying adult learning principles to deliver adult training/education through effective instructional design.
  • Successful track record of effective leadership and collaboration with other functions in a cross-functional team and matrix environment.

ADDITIONAL:

  • Project management experience, managing cross-functional teams and/or external partners through large projects or initiatives.
  • Experience in designing and delivering curricula for both live and virtual settings
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects at one time
  • Excellent communicator who has an enterprise mindset and demonstrated ability to collaborate and build strategic alignment across all business units.
  • Possess the ability to re-prioritize when necessary.
  • Exhibit strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Have critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with training vendors, learning management systems, and e-learning authoring tools.
