Job Description

AbbVie’s Corporate Responsibility & Global Philanthropy organization—which includes ESG, Global Philanthropy, Global Patient Access Programs, Independent Education, and Communications—seeks to advance and sustain a more equitable world to achieve transformational impact for patients, communities, our business, and people.

The Director, ESG Strategy & Intelligence is responsible for monitoring and analyzing the external environment, assessing and interpreting ESG legislation, regulation and overall ESG trends to determine implications for AbbVie across the enterprise, and leveraging insights to inform and advance AbbVie’s ESG strategy. The Director also builds business cases to gain senior leadership support for strategies that advance our ESG objectives and leads cross-functional initiatives in pursuit of our ESG goals. This role reports to the Senior Director, ESG, and is a part of the Corporate Responsibility & Global Philanthropy organization.

This role can be based anywhere in the United States with occasional travel required.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

Intelligence:

  • Consistently monitor and evaluate current and emerging policy/legislation, industry trends in ESG across material topics, and ongoing benchmarking within and outside of the pharma industry.
  • Conduct analysis to anticipate and understand impact, risks and opportunities of trends and dynamics in the external environment, and effectively communicate insights and implications to the ESG team, ESG Council and cross-functional leaders.

 

Strategy:

  • Identify strategic options/approaches for AbbVie to advance our ESG objectives, building business cases to understand potential impact and value, and supporting engagement with senior leaders to generate buy-in and endorsement.
  • Drive strategic initiatives in support of AbbVie’s ESG goals, bringing together the collective effort of subject matter experts across the organization to advance key projects and track progress of key ESG strategic initiatives to ensure goals are met.

 

Engagement:

  • Prepare strategic content for quarterly ESG Council meetings, including presentations to educate Council leadership on key topics and priority initiatives.
  • In collaboration with Corporate Responsibility Communications team, support content development and communications on AbbVie’s ESG approach for use by internal and external stakeholders.
  • With the Senior Director, ESG, support investor engagement on key ESG topics.
  • In key ESG-related forums, advocate for and advance AbbVie perspectives on industry-related ESG topics.

Qualifications

Qualifications include:

  • Minimum 10 years+ experience in fields such as strategy consulting, external affairs, ESG/sustainability, investor relations.  Background in ESG or sustainability an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret implications of a rapidly changing external environment, matched with business acumen to assess impact of legislation/regulation and industry trends for potential risks and opportunities for our enterprise strategy.
  • Ability to build compelling business cases to support strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Excellent project management skills, developing and communicating business plans and priorities, prioritizing tasks, leading cross-functional business partners from across the matrix, and removing barriers and obstacles that impact performance. 
  • Excellent business acumen with the ability to anticipate company and team needs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, high degree of critical thinking and attention to detail, and the ability to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Must be an individual who works well in a team environment and enjoys working in a collegial, yet fast paced and highly demanding culture. Must be able to work collaboratively with senior business leaders and other internal stakeholders across the enterprise.
  • Advanced degree in business, strategy, or other related fields preferred.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​
