The Director of Operations for the Calico-AbbVie Collaboration (at AbbVie) is responsible for overseeing all preclinical and early Development operations, processes, strategic planning and execution for a complex, highly visible, long-term (to 2030), cross-company, collaboration of ~600 scientists/leaders that is unique in the biopharmaceutical industry. Provides individual, direct and matrix team leadership and consulting for high-complexity transformational business programs in close collaboration with the Calico VP at AbbVie and the leadership team across all sites in Discovery and Early Development at AbbVie, and with the senior Leadership, Development and Operations teams at Calico in San Francisco. Leads integration of, and directly manages, all portfolio program- and project-level data. Manages all financial planning, projections, invoicing against >$1.5Bn budget, and all FTE and authorized HC. Develops and executes change management and communication activities in alignment with Calico-AbbVie strategy and manages all cultural aspects of the Collaboration. Creates and drives alignment with internal and external business partners across R&D, with a cross-functional and cross-company mindset. This is a key member of the Collaboration leadership team at AbbVie, accountable to the Collaboration VP.
Responsibilities:
- Drive and contribute to Collaboration strategies and aligned execution
- Serves as a core member of Collaboration Leadership Team and coordinates activities and deliverables
- Actively contributes to cross-functional Collaboration Team discussions both from a PM functional perspective, and a cross-functional strategic perspective
- In partnership with the VP and Sr. Director of Operations, leads and coordinates development of the Collaboration Strategy
- Ensures clear translation of collaboration strategy to integrated execution plans across the collaboration
- Drives a coordinated approach across the collaboration to ensure aligned execution of the asset strategy;
- Partner with Project Managers to ensure accurate, up-to-date project-level timelines and reporting
- Accountable for partnering with the project managers to ensure that timelines reflect project strategy and current status
- Partners with project managers for scenario analysis and associated analytics for project plans
- Ensures that dashboard reports are timely and accurate;
- Identify, communicate and manage risks
- Proactively and independently identifies, communicates and manages collaboration risks with an All for One AbbVie Collaboration mindset
- Partners with project managers to ensure transparent identification and communication of risks
- Applies judgment to ensure that the appropriate risks are captured at the Collaboration level and transparently communicated and escalated as appropriate;
- Partner with the Sr. Director Operations and Team Leads to drive Collaboration Team effectiveness
- Drives collaboration alignment within the Team and structures discussions to drive good decision-making practices
- Actively shares learning and collaborates with Team leads to drive consistency across the portfolio;
- Accountable for helping Asset Team navigate the governance process effectively and efficiently and appropriate use of each forum;
- Serve as a leader for program management, both within the Collaboration and for AbbVie
- Applies best practice program management skills to Collaboration
- Actively contributes to the continual improvement of the Collaboration
- Can serve as a mentor for the Project Managers.
Qualifications:
- 6-8+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in a variety of roles associated with drug development (research and development, commercial, project management, operations) with a track record of expertise in one or more therapeutic areas;
- Minimum of 4 years supporting cross-functional drug development teams in a core function (Program Management, Commercial, Development, Regulatory, Operations);
- Strong strategic thinking and leadership skills;
- Strong communication skills both written and oral;
- Knowledge of program management practices in the pharmaceutical industry;
Preferred:
- Experience in early stage drug development
- Experience in a collaboration with both global and regional teams in the pharmaceutical industry

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
