Job Description

As part of the Search & Evaluation Group within the Corporate Business and Strategy Organization (CBSO), the Chief of Staff will directly support the Vice President, Search & Evaluation and act as a driver for organizational development, execution of strategic initiatives, design and implementation of processes and process improvements, and scientific/technical assessment for special projects.  In addition, the Chief of Staff will work closely with S&E therapeutic area heads on specific projects, in support of projects that execute against AbbVie’s strategic BD priorities, to meet our TA and pipeline goals.  
 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide support to the Vice President, Search & Evaluation, to help achieve enterprise goals for External Innovation/BD.
  • Lead cross-functional projects and strategic initiatives supporting achievement of goals set for External Innovation/BD.
  • Lead and support planning processes (BD Strategy, Financial Planning, organizational development, business processes).
  • Lead special projects (e.g., scientific/technical assessments in support of NBTS go/No-go decisions for M&A or partnering opportunities outside of current core TAs)
  • Provide dedicated support when large or complex assessments or diligence processes are active, by acting as a bridge and integrator across functions.
  • Lead developing materials for the VP S&E to enable executive leadership decision-making on large deals.
  • Lead developing materials for the VP S&E for internal and external communication purposes.
  • Provide support to S&E leads for ongoing assessments, diligence processes and transactions.
  • Translate overarching strategies into various tactical plans for S&E that help achieve S&E-specific and shared CBSO goals for External Innovation/BD.

Qualifications

Qualifications

*Level of the role will be determined based on candidate experience level 

  • Advanced scientific/medical degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent).
  • Minimum years of industry experience: 5+, with experience driving large cross-functional initiatives / projects. Prior industry experience in R&D-related, External Innovation-focused, and/or Strategy-related roles highly preferred. MBA (or equivalent degree in a related discipline) or strategic management consulting experience is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of the drug discovery, pharmaceutical drug development, regulatory, and commercialization process required.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive large cross-functional teams in a matrixed environment, foster team consensus-building and deliver timely results.
  • Strong communication skills, to effectively communicate assessments, plans, strategies and recommendations to key stakeholders across different functional domains as well as to executive audiences
  • Strong analytical skills to drive scientific/technical assessments and to guide high-quality, fact-based decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and act with an entrepreneurial mindset.
