Job Description

The Associate Scientific Director, Medical Affairs, plays a key role in advancing medical affairs activities for AbbVie’s gynecologic oncology portfolio. Working under the leadership of the Senior Director, this position supports the development and execution of the therapeutic area medical strategy including thought leader engagement plans and field provider interactions; generation and dissemination of clinical and scientific data; provider and payer educational initiatives and promotional material generation. The role works closely with commercial teams to provide strategic medical input into core brand strategies and support medical and marketing activities (including the development of promotional materials).

This position must be based at the Mettawa IL (headquarters), Florham Park NJ, or Waltham MA office and will follow a hybrid schedule of Tues-Thurs onsite. Candidates for our San Francisco office may be considered as well.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for performing accurate and detailed medical reviews of complex advertising and promotional materials for assigned therapeutic area(s) within Medical Affairs. Provides timely and accurate reviews of promotional materials in accordance with established policies and practice standards, including regulatory guidelines, to meet customer needs.
  • Contributes to the development of, and leads the execution of, medical education tactics (i.e., field medical resources), advisory boards, and thought leader engagement plans in alignment with the indication or asset's strategic plan.
  • Leads conference planning and execution; represents AbbVie at external scientific meetings.
  • Works closely with International Medical Affairs team to drive synergy and efficiency in content creation and pull through with a Global content perspective, where applicable
  • With oversight, provides input into the development of the medical strategy for approved assets within the therapeutic area.
  • Leads internal medical training activities, including asset onboarding and ongoing education for cross-functional teams.
  • Supports the generation of clinical and scientific evidence to address identified evidence gaps.
  • Manages budgets for assigned Medical Affairs projects and initiatives.
  • Provides subject matter expertise for commercial teams including competitive assessments and regular scientific literature reviews.
  • Contributes to all launch readiness reviews/planning.
  • Supports clinical and scientific data generation including alignment of the Investigator Initiated Study (IIS) strategy as needed to support external communication

Qualifications

  • Scientific degree (bachelor’s) required. Advanced Degree: PhD, PharmD, PA or NP strongly preferred. Residency or additional post doctorate experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry or equivalent; substantial understanding of relevant therapeutic area preferred.
  • Good understanding of Medical Affairs principles, study design and publications.
  • Ability to interact and coordinate appropriate scientific and medical activities with internal stakeholders (i.e. commercial, clinical operations, discovery, statistics, regulatory, etc.) as they relate to on-going medical affairs projects.
  • Knowledge of clinical trial methodology, regulatory requirements governing clinical trials
  • Interactions normally require the ability to gain cooperation of others, conduct presentations of technical information concerning specific projects and schedules, etc.
  • Good understanding of legal and regulatory guidelines (e.g. knowledge of OPDP promotional regulations, CDER/CBER regulations as they relate to drug approvals).
  • Ability to interact externally to support global business strategy. Ability to work effectively with different groups and have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team/matrix environment. Ability to influence others without direct reporting relationships.
  • Works with some supervision and guidance. Exercises judgment within well-defined practices and policies.
