Job Description

The Associate General Counsel of the Global Legal Strategies and Policy is responsible for identifying, developing and executing strategic initiatives for AbbVie, with a substantial focus on regional geographic markets including China. The Associate General Counsel will report to the Senior Associate General Counsel, Global Legal Strategies & Policy Counsel.

 

This team member will need to have demonstrated ability to independently identify practical legal solutions to complex challenges, strong focus on executing goals and the ability to influence key internal and external stakeholders. The Associate General Counsel will be responsible for developing key external engagements for active policy shaping and strategy.

 

The Associate General Counsel also will need demonstrated strong communication skills and will partner with the company’s Legal, Government Affairs, and other key stakeholders to help shape and prepare for regulatory changes. The position also advises on critical access strategies and initiatives and supports innovative solutions in a fast-evolving market and regulatory landscape. 

 

  • Develop and support global strategies with enterprise impact and manage and supervise external counsel and consultant in connection with such strategy development.
  • Working with Government Affairs and other legal departments, responsible for developing strategies to shape external stakeholders including government agencies, industry associations, industry coalitions and other third parties in the healthcare ecosystem.
  • Consistently finds opportunities to strengthen and improve team culture of agility, prioritization, innovative thinking, trust and inspiration, and AbbVie Ways of Working.
  • Continually monitors current and future external trends in the Asia Pacific region, advises on potential impacts to AbbVie, and determines prioritization level needed to develop strategies – advising AbbVie on likely future developments and needs in regulatory, policy, and market landscape.  
  • Supports transition of strategies developed in the Global Legal Strategies & Policy group into executional stages at the regional level, engaging cross-functionally and with the business to establish operational plans.

Qualifications

Law degree from a relevant jurisdiction

8+ years of relevant legal experience with prior government experience in China

General experience with intellectual property or market access matters, with previous pharmaceutical experience being a plus

Experience supporting senior business leaders

Regional experience working with and advising multinational affiliates across markets

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-pressure, matrixed environments.

 

  • Language: English and Mandarin Chinese required

 

  • Location: Preferably based in Shanghai; Beijing as a potential secondary location
