Job Description

The Associate Director, Field Medical Capabilities is responsible for elevating the performance and capabilities of medical field teams across the AbbVie enterprise. By identifying business needs, this role develops and delivers functional enhancements and professional skill training to drive excellence in the field. The Associate Director acts as a strategic partner, collaborating with cross-functional teams and internal stakeholders to assess developmental gaps and design effective capability solutions that align with organizational goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess and address unmet needs in Field Medical Excellence and Development, ensuring alignment with the Medical Affairs & R&D strategic vision.
  • Serve as an internal consultant, creating and executing the annual development and project roadmap for field medical teams.
  • Collaborate with Therapeutic Area leadership to identify and close capability gaps by designing tailored solutions that align with field objectives.
  • Develop and implement innovative solutions (system enhancements, job aids, workshops, reporting processes) to enhance field team effectiveness and credibility.
  • Partner with Medical Excellence and Field Planning & Analytics to ensure project deliverables are within system requirements.
  • Share best practices and leverage enterprise resources across Compliance, Regulatory, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Promote continuous improvement by enhancing existing programs and leading new capabilities initiatives, including technology adoption, change management processes, and improving efficiency.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, MBA) with 3-5 years relevant experience or Bachelors with 5-7 years relevant experience in pharmaceuticals and/or Field Excellence.
  • Strong experience in matrixed environments.  Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to assess and act upon changing business needs quickly.
  • Demonstrated influence without authority, including with senior leaders.
  • Strong leadership and strategic thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, project management, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective management of external vendors and budgets.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and risk.
  • Strong working knowledge of compliance, regulatory, and legal considerations for field medical activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Medical Affairs or Capabilities Experience.
  • Experience with the functionality of CRM platforms.
  • Experience with data analysis, metrics development, and performance tracking.
  • Experience facilitating live and virtual workshop / meeting sessions.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.   • This job is eligible to participate in our short-term incentive programs. ​
