Job Description

Overview:

The Associate Director, BTS Communications, is responsible for supporting the development and execution of strategic technology communications for AbbVie and the Business Technology Services (BTS) organization. Reporting to the Director of Technology Communications, the Associate Director will drive strategic communications across BTS, including organizational evolution efforts (such as the BTS rebrand), digital transformation, core IT initiatives and the BTS Performance Roadmap. The Associate Director will be instrumental in strengthening consistency and unification across BTS communications, deepening BTS and enterprise understanding of BTS priorities, and reinforcing the value and impact of BTS across AbbVie.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement communications designed to support CIO and BTS strategic priorities, including service excellence, IT operations, digital workplace enhancements, technology modernization and broader change initiatives.
  • Develop and lead a pan‑BTS communications engagement campaign designed to highlight BTS colleague successes, strengthen organizational pride and amplify stories that reflect BTS culture, excellence and impact across AbbVie.
  • Ensure consistent BTS messaging across all BTS teams and alignment with enterprise communications, reinforcing a unified and strategic narrative across the organization.
  • Develop and support communications plans for BTS, leveraging deep subject-matter expertise to effectively promote critical technology initiatives and operational improvements across BTS and the enterprise.
  • Develop and coordinate communications designed to support the BTS organization’s Performance Roadmap, including milestones, progress updates, leadership messaging, and employee engagement.
  • Drive tactical execution of communications strategies, supporting key BTS initiatives, organizational evolution and operating‑model change efforts.
  • Provide strategic counsel on communications approaches to the BTS Leadership Team based on the outcomes they are looking to drive.
  • Ensure consistency and high‑quality execution of all communications materials, maintaining enterprise voice, brand compliance, message clarity and integrity.
  • Craft compelling stories that simplify and communicate complex IT priorities, strategies, roadmaps, programs and products for diverse internal and external audiences.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships and ensure cross‑functional alignment across business partners, fostering strong collaboration and visibility for BTS initiatives.
  • Monitor industry and enterprise technology trends to identify communications opportunities, risks and best practices across IT, digital transformation, automation, cybersecurity and emerging tech.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • 10 years’ of proven experience in technology or IT communications, supporting evolving IT operating models, digital transformation, enterprise systems, infrastructure or emerging technology initiatives.
  • Expertise developing and executing communications strategies that support CIO‑ or IT‑led priorities across large, complex organizations.
  • Experience supporting change communications for enterprise‑wide rollout of IT systems, platforms and digital tools, and related ways of working.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing insight-driven, strategic, and measurable internal and external communications programs in support of IT organizations and their related priorities.
  • Exceptional storytelling skills with the ability to translate complex IT and technology concepts into simple, engaging narratives.
  • Proven experience in managing complex stakeholder relationships and driving fast-paced timelines that also support internal review processes with a strong attention to detail and exceptional project management discipline.
  • Experience supporting communications for IT, technology or digital transformation programs; familiarity with AI or automation is a plus.
  • Strong business judgment with the ability to drive a diverse organization with a focused, meaningful and pragmatic approach.
  • Proven track record of working with senior technology leaders and influencing cross‑functional decision‑making.
  • Ability to provide strategic counsel for a variety of communications scenarios and to a variety of internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clear alignment with IT and enterprise priorities.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, analytical strengths and leadership capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team and with multiple internal and external stakeholders, building strong partnerships and shared ownership.
  • Strong communication planning, execution, and process management skills and strong interpersonal skills to quickly build rapport and credibility with leaders, as well as key internal and external stakeholders, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or related field; advanced degree a plus.

  • This job is eligible to participate in our short-term incentive programs. ​
