We're seeking an ambitious finance professional to join our UK Finance Team as Associate Controller. This is a unique development opportunity created by internal promotion, with a clear pathway to Financial Controller within 12 months. You'll provide financial leadership across all UK entities while managing a team of two and partnering with stakeholders across the business to drive both compliance and commercial agility.
The role will be based in our head office in Maidenhead and will report to the Financial Controller.
Objectives
As a senior member of the AbbVie UK Finance Team, the Associate Controller provides financial leadership across all UK entity activities, ensuring robust internal controls while enabling business agility and compliance.
This is a leadership role managing 2 direct reports: the Finance Business Partner for Rebates & G&A and the Finance Accounts Assistant. The Associate Controller collaborates with diverse stakeholders across the UK Affiliate and wider company and coordinates with external partners providing outsourced and specialist services.
Key responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Development – Manage, coach and develop two direct reports including oversight of their areas of responsibility such as accrual and payment of Rebates, Fixed Assets Management and G&A Expenses.
- Shared Services Liaison – Serve as the primary Affiliate contact for Finance Shared Services (FSS), supporting the FSS Lead Accountant with queries and process coordination
- Month-End Financial Close – Oversee month-end processes, including review of Affiliate-initiated journal entries and Area balance sheet reporting. Conduct monthly Balance Sheet reviews with FSS to ensure aged or open items are resolved promptly and followed up at the local level.
- External Audit Management – Lead all external audit activities for the UK Affiliate, coordinating interactions between the audit team, Finance Business Partners, FSS, management, and other key stakeholders. Review statutory accounts for all UK entities and collaborate with FSS on technical local GAAP accounting matters.
- Tax & Compliance – Act as the Finance Division's key contact for Corporate Tax, VAT with support from the Tax Centre of Excellence (COE). Liaise with external advisors on employment-related tax queries and support ad hoc tax requirements.
- Entity Planning – Lead Entity Planning processes and conduct reviews
- Cross-Functional Business Partnering – Collaborate with other departments on cross-functional initiatives, for example with Business HR on salary sacrifice projects.
- Finance Process Innovation – Lead and support internal Finance initiatives to enhance reporting capabilities, including the implementation of AI and other technology solutions.
Requirements
- Qualified accountant with at least 5 years PQE (ACA, ACCA or equivalent)
- Previous people management experience preferred
- Strong computer skills particularly Microsoft Office & Power BI
- Experience of working with and developing good working relationships with individuals at all levels of an organisation.
- Experience managing external audits and statutory reporting
- SAP experience advantageous

Where We Work
Role is primarily site- or office-based but can occasionally be performed remotely. Employees who are site/office-based and can occasionally perform their role virtually work both in the office and remotely*, following the policies and regulations in place at their location. US Employees must be in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Three days in the office is the minimum; some individuals or teams may require more in-office days due to meetings, business/project needs or their role.
