Job Description

The Asset Strategy Leader (ASL) serves as the matrix leader with overall, enterprise-wide accountability for AbbVie’s products from discovery to end of life cycle.

  • Chairs an Asset Strategy Team(s) (AST) and ensures alignment across the five core deliverable teams (Integrated Evidence, Value & Access, Brand, Label & Regulatory, and Product Presentation & Device) partnering effectively with the functional chairs of those deliverable teams to ensure delivery of the integrated strategy. In this capacity, serves as the enterprise leader who is the asset’s primary point of contact for AbbVie’s Pipeline Commercialization Model (PCM) Governance bodies and senior management.
  • Leads the effort to create, articulate, and gain endorsement of an integrated cross-functional strategy for all aspects of product development and commercialization, consistent with the overall Therapeutic Area and Disease Area Strategies and is able to direct teams to appropriately navigate complex emergent situations. Maintains primary responsibility for the ensuing deliverables, including a functionally-aligned asset strategy.
  • Builds strong, collaborative peer-to-peer relationships with governance team members and executives to enable optimal timely, multi-directional, and comprehensive interactions with PCM Governance at pre-specified milestones and as program issues or opportunities arise.
  • Reviews and analyzes emerging data objectively to lead or direct the Asset Strategy Team toward recommendations that highlight opportunities, address potential risks, and proactively provide strategic optionality.
  • Has a deep understanding of the role and value of each function on the team, to know how to solicit timely input. Collaborates with AST functions to ensure the asset is appropriately resourced and stays within allocated budget, and champions requests for incremental funding and resources. Works continually with supporting teams to ensure that strategy is pulled through to tactical plans consistent with all elements of the asset strategy.
  • Ensures that the AST continually validates the viability of the program from a scientific and commercial perspective. Develops clear, prospective Go/No-Go decision points and serves as a champion for the program, using objectivity and judgment to analyze, interpret, and present data to PCM Governance and senior management.
  • Establishes close, ongoing ties with across Asset and deliverable team members  and enables a culture of inclusivity, psychological safety, and empowerment. Maintains a function-neutral position in prioritizing actions and making decisions, with an eye toward optimizing asset and portfolio value in a timely and high-quality fashion. Coaches and mentors team members, consistent with the High Performing Teams (HPT) model. Enables the AST to focus on strategy and decision-making, and optimal communication of issues to supporting teams and leadership.
  • Represents the AST at interactions with external parties (e.g., Advisory Boards, regulatory interactions) when these engagements require broad cross-functional contributions. Exhibits exceptional executive presence and clear communication with all levels of management.
  • Works with team members to maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the competitive environment in the field and to assess for potential impact on ongoing programs. Stays abreast of professional information, industry trends, and emerging technology through conferences, medical literature, and training to augment expertise in drug development and the pharmaceutical industry. Develops a comprehensive understanding of how AbbVie’s assets are positioned relative to competitor assets

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Advanced degree highly preferred (e.g. PhD, MBA).
  • Relevant experience (minimum of 5 years; 10+ years preferred) in a pharmaceutical/biotech setting with deep expertise in a relevant discipline associated with drug development and /or commercialization and ideally experienced in multiple areas of the industry, often with multiple therapy areas, phases of development and commercialization and/or both small molecule and biologic experience.
  • Demonstrated a high-level of strategic thinking, leadership, and problem-solving, with the ability to swiftly apply new knowledge to asset strategy and enterprise priorities.
  • Experience leading an asset team or cross-functional strategic team, preferably with a global scope.
  • Ability to objectively exercise judgment and create pragmatic solutions to address complex cross-functional problems, and to be accountable for obtaining stakeholder advice to make informed decisions, to move a program forward in the face of uncertainty or incomplete data. Can stand alone or take unpopular decisions to ensure appropriate organizational decisions.
  • Ability to lead and motivate team members from across functional areas; must be able to lead through influence and bring out the best in others. Ability to delegate appropriate accountability and decision-making to supporting teams and functions.
  • Proven ability in successfully leading assets or functions in complex matrix environments
  • Able to lead independently with minimal managerial oversight required
  • Ability and willingness to respectfully challenge team members and functions, manage conflict, to assess all opportunities, options, risks, and mitigations.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills, demonstrated proficiency in communicating strategy with executive presence

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​
