Small Molecule Analytical R&D Internship Overview

This internship opportunity is in the Small Molecule Analytical R&D group within Development Sciences and will closely collaborate with Product Development Science & Technology and Drug Product Development teams. Under the supervision of a senior scientist and with guidance from the team, the individual will build fundamental understanding of nitrosamine analysis in drug products within the pharmaceutical industry and develop solutions to address the concentration challenges inherent in this analysis.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the execution of experiments to evaluate the application of solid-phase extraction in nitrosamine analysis of pharmaceutical drug products. This experimental work will include sample clean-up and enrichment, as well as quantitative analysis using LC-MS/MS.
- Interpret scientific results to establish decision matrix for the quick identification of appropriate sample preparation procedures for nitrosamine analysis in pharmaceutical drug products.
This internship will be based in North Chicago, IL.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Chemistry or closely related field.
- Hands-on experience in sample preparation and quantitative mass spectrometry.
- Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expected graduation date between December 2025 – July 2026.
- Hands-on experience with Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS.)
- Experience in trace level analysis and sample preparation and enrichment, i.e., solid phase extraction (SPE.)
- Ability to conduct and interpret scientific experiments, providing suggestions for additional experiments.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated; ability to execute with limited supervision and direction. Can work independently or part of a team.
- Troubleshoot experiments, identify and solve elementary problems in experimental designs, including laboratory experimentation.
- Proficient in required software including Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
