Precision Medicine Genomics Specialist Intern Overview

AbbVie's Precision Medicine organization (PMed) is dedicated to advancing translational research and clinical biomarker strategies. Our Translational Research Genomics group in the Precision Medicine Oncology department utilizes advanced single-cell sequencing technologies to study cancer biology, identify biomarkers, and validate mechanisms of action for AbbVie's innovative oncology pipelines. These efforts inform clinical decisions, improve patient outcomes, and enable precise targeting of medicines, identification of combination opportunities, and provision of actionable diagnostic tools to patients and physicians.
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented summer intern to join our Precision Medicine Genomics team. The primary focus of this internship will be to contribute to the construction and refinement of an internal single-cell RNAseq or CITEseq database using existing internal data. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in translational research and work with cutting-edge technologies and advanced analytics.
This internship will be based in South San Francisco, CA.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build, test, and validate advanced single-cell analysis and annotation pipelines.
- Collate and organize single-cell RNAseq/CITE-Seq data.
- Help construct and refine the internal scRNAseq/CITEseq database and cell annotations.
- Integrate data sets and incorporate multiple layers of cell annotations.
- Perform retrospective analyses of existing datasets and align them with previous analyses and annotation results.
- Ensure the database meets publication standards and internal requirements for cell type classifications.
- Contribute to the development of a dependable and distributable internal baseline reference.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in university, pursing a Master’s or PhD in Bioinformatics, Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Computer Biology, Computer Science or other related field
- Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship
Preferred Qualifications
- Expected graduation date between December 2025 – July 2026
- Strong understanding of scRNAseq genomics and molecular biology principles
- Proficiency in single-cell RNAseq data analysis using multiple samples
- Proficiency in utilizing R and Python in a Linux environment
- Familiarity with immune cell types and markers
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with a team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
