Lipid Nanoparticle Technology Development Intern Overview

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) represent a key new modality to enable the effective delivery of mRNA.  The Small Molecule Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (SM CMC) organization is seeking a highly motivated, talented, and creative intern to generate a rapid mixing platform for lipid nanoparticles. This platform will be used to screen LNP compositions in a well-defined and characterized system that will enable robust scale-up. This work will significantly enhance understanding of this manufacturing platform to influence the design of a scale-up system, with the potential for a peer-reviewed publication on a demonstrated use case. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Helping to advance the LNP manufacturing platform by establishing a workflow for evaluation of various material parameters, while also expanding fundamental understanding of the impact of process and material parameters on LNP formation.
  • The outcome of this work will enable the team to rapidly design an LNP process and evaluate the physical stability of LNP formulations.

This internship will be based in North Chicago, IL.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master’s or PhD in chemical engineering, material science and engineering, pharmaceutical sciences and engineering, or other related field.
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
  • Fundamental understanding of analytical characterization techniques for lipid nanoparticle formulation development and testing.
  • Experience developing and characterizing lipid nanoparticle drug delivery systems for systemic and targeted RNA delivery.
  • Excellent self-management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills and ability to clearly communicate theories and concepts and drive technical excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expected graduation date between December 2025 – July 2026.
  • Knowledge of preclinical and clinical formulation development principles relevant to lipid nanoparticle formulations.
