Twin Screw Granulation Internship Overview
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.
AbbVie’s Small Molecule Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) Development team plays a key role in developing novel small molecule chemical entities into robust drug products for clinical studies and commercial launch. Under supervision of experienced research scientists, the intern will support the Small Molecule CMC development team in establishing approaches to assess and model evolution of material properties (e.g. API particle size change) during twin screw granulation for the manufacture of oral dosage forms. In this exciting opportunity, the intern will develop approaches to quantify raw material particle size changes in multi-component granules, conduct granulation studies using twin screw granulator, and build a model(s) that connect material properties to the extent of particle size changes in such processes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Identify key material physical property attributes (such as mechanical properties, morphology, size) for particle breakage.
- Conduct granulation studies and establish process conditions/excipient choice that would reduce/mitigate effects of raw material breakages.
- Develop new approaches to quantify raw material particle size in multi-component granules.
- Develop model to address underlying breakage rate and mechanism in combination of computational Particle Informatics tools.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Physical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Materials Science & Engineering, or other related field.
- Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expected graduation date between December 2024 – July 2025.
- Fundamental understanding of physicochemical properties as related to formulation design.
- Working knowledge of twin-screw processing and/or breakage processes used in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Experience in the development of first-principle or empirical model to relate material properties to process and performance.
- Experience with analytical approaches toward physical property characterization of small-molecule candidates (i.e. particle size, PXRD, microscopy, etc.)
- Self-motivated; ability to execute with limited supervision and direction. Can work independently or part of a team.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills and specifically illustrate strong oral and written technical communications.
Benefits and Amenities
- Competitive pay.
- Relocation support for eligible students.
- Opportunity to connect with Abbvie leaders and scientists.
- Exposure to state-of-the-art facilities and experts in drug substance and drug product development.
