Job Description

Ophthalmology Discovery Research Internship Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

The Ophthalmology Discovery Research Intern will support target identification and validation for Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which is one of the most common forms of blindness in the United States. This intern position is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to the discovery of new therapeutics that stop the progression of retinal blindness in AMD. The research will be focused on validating genes of interest using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and RNAscope (in situ hybridization) in human AMD samples and AMD animal model tissue sections.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Perform IHC and RNAscope techniques to validate GOIs on tissue sections
  • Plan, collaborate, execute, and summarize results from the studies undertaken

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Biology or other related Majors with a passion for imaging, histology and/or molecular biology techniques.
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
  • Hands-on experimental experience within biology-related research.
  • Effective communicator who can adapt and be flexible when required.
  • Motivated team player with a can-do attitude.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expected graduation date between December 2024 – July 2025.
  • Exposure to ophthalmology and retina research and related diseases.
  • Experience with histology, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization.
  • Exposure to transcriptomics studies is highly desirable.
