Cross-Coupling Chemistry Technology Development Internship Overview

The Cross-Coupling Chemistry Technology Development Intern will work within the Advanced Chemistry Technologies (ACT) group, which is part of AbbVie’s Drug Discovery organization. The intern will work with chemists to evaluate existing alkyl cross-coupling methods and potentially develop novel synthetic chemistry technologies to advance AbbVie’s discovery pipeline.
Key responsibilities include:
- Maintain a high level of productivity in a laboratory setting.
- Utilize a broad range of experimental techniques and methods of data analysis.
- Learn, understand, and troubleshoot new synthetic methods and chemistry technologies.
- Effectively communicate research updates and write research reports.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientific standards and safe laboratory practices.
- Present project results to department management and broader group at the conclusion of the internship.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master’s degree or PhD in Organic Chemistry or other related field.
- Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
- Experience conducting and analyzing organic reactions in a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expected graduation date between December 2024 – July 2025.
- Experience with, or working knowledge of, emerging synthetic technologies such as C(sp 2 )-C(sp 3 ) cross-couplings, photoredox chemistry, or electrochemistry.
- Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills. Ability to resolve project hurdles using available data, scientific literature, less-than-perfect information, or technical expertise.
