Job Description

2024 Bioinformatics Engineering Intern Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

This internship opportunity is in the Bioinformatics Engineering (BE) team within AbbVie’s Genomics Research Center (GRC), which plays a key role in building automation and standardized processing pipelines to support Next-Gen sequencing projects through preprocessing/QC, standardized bioinformatics processing, and analysis. The data for such projects spans multiple GRC teams, including Genomics Technology, Computational Genomics, and Therapeutic Area focused Bioinformatics groups. Under supervision of a senior member of the BE team, the candidate will develop processes to collect the QC and performance metrics for internally sequenced samples so that we may visualize performance outliers. This data will provide the GRC insights with potential to improve efficiency, processing costs, and quality of our downstream analyses. The candidate will gain a thorough perspective on NGS data generation and processing in a biopharmaceutical industry research setting, and further develop their technical experience through building and applying software tools to data engineering challenges.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders from data generation and processing teams to understand the metrics available at each relevant stage.
  • Establish a centralized collection point, and necessary processes for gathering the required data.
  • Communicate details of the project to key stakeholders throughout the term and present a summary upon conclusion of the program.
  • Stretch aims for this internship will involve generating visualizations based on the collected data that may be used to define and identify performance outliers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing Master's or Ph.D. in Biology, Biomedical Engineering or related field.
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
  • Demonstrated experience with Python.
  • Proficiency working in Linux environments.
  • Self-motivated; ability to execute with limited supervision and direction. Can work independently or part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to effectively present complex information to stakeholders at various levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expected graduation date between December 2024 – July 2025.
  • Experience working with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis and bioinformatics tools.
  • Proficiency in R for data analysis and visualization.
  • Familiarity with RDMS (Relational Database Management Systems).
  • Experience working in HPC environments (on-prem/cloud).
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis methods and tools for data interpretation.
  • Knowledge of genomics and molecular biology concepts and techniques.

Benefits and Amenities

  • Competitive pay
