Associate Director, Product Development Engineer (R&D Device)

Working individually and as part of an advanced development team, this individual will use analytical, computational and experimental methods to demonstrate feasibility and implementation of medical devices.  Areas of focus for the Advanced Development Team include new protocols and methods for CoolSculpting®, CoolTone®, and Resonic® devices and procedures, as well as active exploration and development of promising new aesthetic energy-based medical device opportunities.  

Duties will span a broad range of activities, from implementation of computational simulations, to support technology selection, design, fabrication and testing of concept prototypes, plus support of in-vitro, preclinical and clinical studies, with focus on acoustic wave technologies.  


  • Apply a combination of analytical, computational methods and bench test models to explore merit and feasibility of new product concepts.
  • Deploy computational fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, ultrasound and impulse acoustic simulation, and electromagnetics tools to design and analyze energy interaction in engineering materials and soft tissue.
  • Create, validate, and maintain accurate simulation models for energy-based devices incorporating ultrasonic and impulse acoustic transducers.
  • Design, analysis, and validation of specific spatial and temporal acoustic fields and heat generation for the treatment of soft tissue.
  • Analyze tissue interaction with high power acoustic fields.
  • Design, build, and test concept prototypes.
  • Selects and qualifies suppliers of acoustic transducer and diagnostic technologies.
  • Evaluate performance of existing and competitive designs of acoustic medical devices using both simulation and lab-based measurements.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) on therapeutic acoustic medical devices.
  • Document design concepts and technical progress in lab notebooks and patent disclosures.
  • Develop experiment design data analysis methods and error analysis.
  • Evaluation, preparation and management of in-house and outsourced research activities and data.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop and execute research studies in in-vitro, ex-vivo and/or in-vivo settings.
  • Follows the literature and explores new fields of biological research with focus on ultrasound and impulse acoustic technologies.
  • Document design concepts and technical progress in lab notebooks and patent disclosures.
  • Prepare and communicate research and development work to peers, project teams, and external research partners.
  • Authors, reviews, and approves technical data for peer-reviewed publications and marketing materials.
  • Write technical reports documenting device testing, numerical models, research experiments, methods, results, analysis, and conclusions.
  • Apply risk management and design control procedures as required in the development and test of human-use devices.
  • Participates in hiring, mentoring and training new staff or peers as needed.

  • MS in acoustic (preferred), mechanical, or electrical engineering, or physics with12+ years research & development experience or PhD with 10+ years relevant experience.
  • Design experience with acoustic-based medical devices (ultrasound or impulse).
  • Design optimization and analytical skills in acoustics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer and electromagnetics including experience using FEA and mathematical software tools.
  • Parametric solid modeling CAD experience.
  • Test fixture design, assembly, qualification, and bench testing skills and experience.
  • Significant contributions to the success of novel medical devices with direct experience authoring scientific research.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and recommendations.
  • Ability to convey project accomplishments, issues, and status clearly and concisely to project team members and management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic cross-functional environment.
  • Knowledge in ISO and FDA quality systems regulations and medical design and development lifecycle.
