Seeking a highly motivated research scientist to join AbbVie’s Pharmaceutics group at our corporate headquarters located in the Chicago area. In this position you will be a key member of cross functional teams assessing developability of new chemical entities in AbbVie’s discovery pipeline. The applicant should have strong knowledge of physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties that are important for oral drug absorption and other drug delivery approaches. The candidate must collaborate effectively across disciplines to holistically assess developability of lead chemical matter within rapidly evolving project landscapes.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and perform diverse in vitro and ex vivo assays to advise project teams on development potential
• Partner with preclinical development scientists across AbbVie sites for efficient execution of studies
• Summarize results and draw conclusions in team meetings
• Maintain excellent documentation of all work including electronic lab notebooks, test methods and protocols. 
• Generate new research ideas to address unmet needs

Position can be a Senior Scientist I or II based on the candidate's level of experience and education

Basic: 

• BS (10-12 yrs. experience), MS (8-10 yrs. experience) or PhD (0-4 yrs. experience) in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering

Preferred:

• Fundamental understanding of physicochemical properties as related to drug delivery and preclinical and clinical formulation design
• Working knowledge of physiological barriers to drug absorption, including various potential transport mechanisms
• Working knowledge of typical formulation approaches and routes of administration (i.e. IV, SC, IP, PO) across multiple species
• Experience in the development of in vitro approaches towards understanding in vivo performance
• Experience with analytical approaches toward physicochemical characterization of small-molecule candidates (i.e. HPLC, DSC, TGA, PXRD, drug release)
• Familiarity with statistical tools that help in the analysis and interpretation of trends in large data sets
• Excellent verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to clearly summarize results for presentation and report generation
