The Scientific IT group at AbbVie Bioresearch Center supports a variety of technical computing workloads serving a community of scientists focusing on pharmaceutical R&D. This position offers the opportunity to work in a cross functional team of informatics scientists and IT professionals in building a next generation scientific compute platform. We are looking for an exceptionally driven and hands-on Cloud Architect / Senior Data Operations Engineer to assist in expanding our internal cloud and data management strategies. The candidate must possess a solid understanding of AWS Cloud Design and Operations, Infrastructure as Code, IT Automation/DevOps, and System Administration. Experience with the biopharmaceutical and/or life sciences preferred. A successful candidate will be someone who actively seeks out new opportunities and excels in applying novel approaches to complex IT problems, can work independently and see projects from start to finish, has strong verbal and written communication skills, and can interact directly with stakeholders.  This position will be responsible for managing projects and may have direct reports.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work with project teams to design and implement Cloud and on-prem technical computing strategies including hardware installation, operation system, CI/CD automation pipelines, and application software deployments
• Conceive, design, engineer, and implement software, data, and technology solutions by studying information needs, conferring with users, analyzing systems flow, data usage, and work processes; investigate problem areas; effectively resolve key hurdles and assumptions utilizing available information and technical expertise
• Implement scalable deployment strategies through automation/orchestration, scripting and containerization in both on-premises and cloud settings with the goals of applying DevOps methodologies to scientific computing
• Work with developers and data scientists to train and/or implement DevOps tools and strategies in new and/or legacy projects
• Work with scientists to analyze issues and to prototype, test, tune document and deploy processing and data acquisition pipelines
• Work as a key liaison between IT and business stakeholders on various projects and initiatives
• Assist users to install, configure and/or script informatics tools and applications. Help guide their analytical processes through understanding their work and data flows

Requirements:

• Bachelors Degree with 8+ years experience in Computer Science, IT, Bioinformatics or related field
• Proven experience in Cloud Operations and Design (AWS Preferred)
• Strong Data Operations and/or Data Engineering Experience
• Database management and SQL experience (Oracle, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
• Ability to align with business and IT stakeholders to define and execute upon strategic goals and initiatives within AbbVie as they pertain to DevOps and DataOps
• Experience in the planning, deployment, and management of Linux systems (RHEL, Ubuntu)
• Strong experience in scripting languages (Bash, Python)
• Experience with containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Strong experience implementing and deploying Infrastructure as Code (Ansible, JIRA, CloudFormation, Terraform)
• Some experience implementing and managing orchestration and automation tools or platforms (Jenkins, Git Flow)

Optional Preferred Experience

• Experience managing direct reports and projects
• Experience supporting/developing informatics systems and pipelines in machine learning, medical or basic science research environments
• Experience working in a Data Science, Life Sciences or Pharmaceutical Industry
• Windows Server Administration
• Experience with alternative computational platforms including GPUs and ML/AI methodologies
