Associate Scientist / Scientist, Synthetic/Medicinal Chemistry

Our Chemistry Department at the AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA is looking for an Organic or Medicinal Chemist to join our team. Our department is responsible for discovering drug candidates for a variety of immunology programs.

As a team member, you will carry out multi-step organic synthesis and also parallel synthesis of chemical libraries, purification and characterization of novel small molecules for biological evaluation in our drug discovery programs. You will also be responsible for the synthesis and scale up of pre- clinical compounds on the milligram to multi-gram scale.

Qualifications:

Position will be hired based on level of experience.

  • BS or MS in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry with typically 3-7+ (BS) or 0-5+ (MS) years of experience
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent innovation are necessary
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles, concepts and methods in medicinal chemistry are essential. We require broad expertise in modern synthetic methods
  • Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in organic synthesis, including application of modern synthesis techniques and tools
  • Knowledge of spectroscopic methods for small molecule analysis (NMR, IR, UV, MS) and experience in analytical/preparative separation procedures (normal phase and reverse-phase HPLC) are necessary
  • Teaching experience and record of scientific publications will be helpful for later training/supervisory function of laboratory staff and to interact productively with the intra- and extramural science community
  • Good oral/written communication, planning and teamwork skills are expected
