Director, Portfolio & Operations Analytics

  • Purpose:

    This position is responsible for driving portfolio management excellence across the preclinical portfolio, including but not limited to pipeline governance, metrics, KPIs, analytics, and information management. Works directly with the Discovery VP to define portfolio goals. Ensures effective execution against portfolio goals and identifies risks and mitigation options. Takes a leading role in planning, executing, implementing, and maintaining a multidisciplinary governance forum for the preclinical pipeline (i.e., RRC). Leads the Discovery Research Portfolio Management Team


  • Brings people, processes, and technologies together to generate business value from portfolio data
  • Works with system, data and process owners to ensure that technology and processes are established globally to provide the organization with efficient systems to collect, process, summarize, and analyze portfolio data
  • Accountable for optimization and standardization of operations for Pipeline Operations Analytics
  • Accountable for building scalable business strategy and for managing execution against available budget
  • Supports risk-based monitoring through advanced portfolio modeling and identification of critical risk indicators
  • Establishes an environment and substructures to foster continuous improvement. Builds strong lasting relationships with Discovery Research leaders and staff, and with cross-functional leaders. Cultivates future leaders of both Integrated Discovery Operations and other functions
  • Provides direct skills and leads a team in developing and preparing a consistent set of operational reports/dashboards for leadership that reflect established KPIs and metrics
  • Accountable for the agile development of visualizations, reports and analyses, for the integrity of source data and representations, and for the overall continuity of data-related processes for AbbVie preclinical pipeline
  • Oversees team in the extraction, aggregation and quality assurance of data from multiple sources in support of performing quantitative analyses of preclinical operations
  • Directs the development and execution of analytical and/or research activities to provide senior leadership with information and tools for strategic decision making and planning, to identify efficiency opportunities, trends, and data and informatics needs
  • Stakeholders:

    Discovery Research VP, Development Sciences VP, Discovery Research Area VPs. Discovery Research Area VP Chiefs of Staff, Pipeline Project Leaders, Information Research (BTS), Development Portfolio and Project Management team, Owners of R&D systems that consume TCPR/DPOP system information


  • Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in science or business related fields. 10+ years portfolio management within the pharmaceutical industry or related area. 10+ years supervisory experience.
  • Expert knowledge of preclinical data management systems, operations systems, and supported processes
  • Expert knowledge of portfolio management methodologies and technologies
  • Deep contextual knowledge of preclinical processes
  • Understanding of emerging requirements, data sources and technologies and the possible impact to R&D
  • Ability to manage data integration across pipeline projects through strategic approaches that incorporate cross-functional business needs
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills required for advancing the implementation, enhancement, and integration of portfolio management processes, and for interactions across sites and with other functional areas
  • Preferred:

  • Experience with preclinical portfolio governance processes
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively convey key messages from complex analysis in both written and oral communication to all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to use portfolio management practices to impact leadership decision making and optimize portfolio performance
  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and motivate others in a complex, multi-functional matrix environment.  Excellent cross-functional relationship building skills and demonstrated business acumen
