Description

The Director of Global Compound Logistics and Operations will serve as the head of AbbVie’s Global Compound Management Operations and IT functions supporting AbbVie R&D Discovery and Development Sciences.  The global leader in this role will be responsible for AbbVie’s global research compound repositories and will guide the activities of the local operations managers at each of AbbVie’s global research sites. The leader in this role will continue to shape the vision of Global Compound Management and ensure its’ current and long-term operational success.  This leader will also have primary responsibility for the design and implementation of IT solutions for R&D wide pre-clinical sample management logistics, which includes fully digital/traceable receiving, inventorying, dispersing, and shipping of compounds for analytical and bioassay testing across all our disease and functional areas.

The Director will lead the continuous analysis of existing operational workflows, logistical transitions, decision points and data management throughout the entire Pre-Clinical R&D environment and in collaboration with R&D colleagues. These efforts will lead to the development of updated methods, tools, measures and change management approaches to streamline, harmonize, and communicate business improvement activities in accordance with robust continuous improvement strategies. 

This position will partner closely with Global Trade Compliance, Environmental Health and Safety, and R&D colleagues worldwide to provide flexible, effective, and compliant solutions which will ensure that AbbVie scientists continue to have “the right compounds in the right format in the right location at the right time.” 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Design, implement, optimize, and manage logistics, ordering, delivery, inventory management, and warehousing management systems, teams, and processes for handling research materials critical to the efficient operation of a global R&D organization.
  • Negotiate with and influence teams outside their direct control that are responsible for upstream and downstream processes in order to maximize overall efficiency and compliance.  This includes international Customs agencies, Technology Licensing and Collaboration teams, etc.
  • Manage software, hardware, and automation systems critical to maximizing productivity and minimizing turn-around time.  Key performance indicators (KPI’s) will be overall research efficiency, reliability, and adaptability to shifting research demands.
  • Lead the compound repository managers at AbbVie’s satellite R&D sites to develop and implement the long-range plan for sample logistics and operations.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Experience implementing complex, flexible, and efficient manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, or inventory management operations. 
  • Knowledge of IT systems and Robotic operations (e.g. vessel storage (Ambient and Frozen), liquid handlers, etc)
  • Excellent people management skills and the demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a global team with a strong customer service outlook. 
  • Demonstrated ability to operate outside areas of formal education.

Preferred:

  • Experience operating a Compound Management repository, familiarity with Dangerous Goods (HazMat) regulations, organic chemistry, biology, chemical registration, budgeting, and the management of controlled substances.
  • Experience operating/leading in a global enterprise that must deliver business solutions while meeting requirements established by law, regulations, and company policies.
  • Business Analysis and Software Development skills
