Regional Therapeutic Area Lead, Biomarker Strategy, Western Europe & Canada

The Regional (Area) TA Lead, Western Europe & Canada, for Biomarker Strategy, reports to the Area TA Head Oncology, Western Europe & Canada and will co-develop and lead implementation of the strategy for Medical Affairs across the Oncology portfolio.

She/he will act as the key subject matter expert to inform and shape global strategy and will partner with the affiliates to gain a deep understanding of local needs and specificities of the diagnosis and treatment journey.  The Area TA Lead Biomarker Strategy will also serve as subject matter expert in biomarkers and companion diagnostics and will stay abreast of the external landscape and latest developments in the field. She/he will be accountable for driving affiliate launch readiness regarding biomarkers thereby enabling health care professionals to reliably identify patients that might benefit from AbbVie medicinal products according to approved labels.


Major Responsibilities

  • The Area Biomarker Lead, WEC will work with the relevant GMA Functions (Biomarker and CDx Associate Director, GMA leads for the relevant Hemato-Oncology TAs) to carry out the following responsibilities:
    • Inform and support the definition of the Medical Launch Readiness activities
    • Apply experience and expertise of Oncology technical, scientific and medical knowledge to inform Global Medical plans and tactics and support Affiliates in defining local medical plan
    • Implement the Biomarker Playbook in the WE&C Affiliates
    • Keep abreast of technical, scientific, and medical information through attendance of selected Scientific Congresses, literature and other sources of relevant information and acts as a therapeutic area expert in biomarkers and companion diagnostics. Promptly alert the WE&C Area teams, GMA and Affiliates counterparts on the new and most critical information
    • Establish and maintain a scientific network with the Key Experts in WE&C, working interactively with External TA Experts, Scientists, Pathologists to identify relevant questions and topics to be addressed with Key Medical Activities (Evidence Generation, Education, etc.)
  • Develop and coordinate the overarching Biomarker strategy across the Oncology portfolio in WE&C, in strong partnership with the cross-functional Area Brand Team
  • Serve as subject matter expert for the scientific review, and where needed. co-development of AbbVie-sponsored or externally sponsored research
  • Act as the Single Point of Contact for WE&C medical teams for clinical data and key strategic priorities for the implementation of the biomarker Strategy for on-market as well as mid- to late-stage products and indications
  • Understand regulatory and OEC requirements and work with high ethics and compliance standards
  • Understand deeply the patient and treatment journey
  • Provide leadership, oversight and support for assigned initiatives with a clear plan and drive execution of the right tactics to completion on time (in cooperation with cross-functional and in-function colleagues)
  • Ensure the biomarker-related part of the scientific narrative is sound and consistently communicated in internal and external forums and educational initiatives
  • Act (when needed) as medical/scientific leader for projects within an Area or across several areas
  • Assist (when needed) in the development of scientifically accurate medical education programs, advisories, and symposia and promotional materials

Education :

  • Advanced education (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., PharmD., PA, NP)


  • 5+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical or diagnostic industry with professional responsibility driving completion of strategic initiatives and tactical plans with a collaborative approach
  • Residence and/ or postdoc or longstanding industry experience in Oncology is highly preferred


  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams to achieve strategic business goals
  • Strong networking skills and demonstrated experience in working in complex matrix environment
  • Strong understanding of Medical Affairs and Oncology with recent pharmaceutical industry experience in the field
  • Experience with CDx development and Immuno-Oncology is desired
  • Highly organized and demonstrated passion for driving to achieve objectives and goals
  • Fluency in English is required, second major language spoken is considered a plus.
