Utilities Engineering Tech II - Sewers/Tunnels/Underground Systems

Provide support, as training and work experience dictate, to repair, maintain and continually improve process, facility, and utility and/or qualification systems to maximize efficiency, prevent any interruption of production, facilitate new processes and/or enhance operation. Develop areas of expertise on certain systems, equipment and procedures as training and work experience dictate. Examples of supporting assignments include: system maintenance, equipment or process design and development, validation of equipment, materials and processes, preparation of specifications.  Responsible to support North Chicago Utilities Operations team for site storm, chemical and sanitary sewers, site utility tunnels, and underground systems and related distribution systems, and other equipment/systems as needed, including maintenance and operating procedures across NC site campus and its multiple buildings.


  • Works under minimal direction of supervisor or technical lead on assignments.
  • Provide technical service for systems as assigned: repair, troubleshooting, and daily monitoring for potential issues and/or improvements.
  • Identify and evaluate problematic issues and help implement and communicate solutions.
  • Assist operations in the process of troubleshooting to determine potential impacts on production and facility systems.
  • Assist in gathering system information and specifications for production, engineering groups and outside consultants, contractors, and various departments within the company.
  • Participate and/or assist engineers in the design of process equipment or systems for optimal performance. Assist in the start-up of new and troubleshoot existing facilities/equipment to ensure optimal operation and performance.
  • Makes recommendations to improve processes, equipment or work processes and works with vendors and engineering to identify new equipment or technologies which may be beneficial or increase efficiency.
  • Oversee and coordinate maintenance, internal and external resources, and project related activities with the daily production schedule to ensure on-time completion.
  • Makes required field inspections for job site conditions including operability, maintainability, safety, environmental and quality issues.
  • Provide recommendations to Operations and Leadership for equipment use and run frequency, Optimize systems operation, Support engineers with long- and short-range capital project planning, annual system health assessments and project implementation
  • Schedule and execute periodic maintenance, Act as liaison with local and state authorities,
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis Boards as subject matter expert for systems responsible
  • Share knowledge with site personnel in formal and informal sessions
  • Lead resolution of equipment problems, supports after-hours coverage to respond to plant events as needed, and support occasional mandatory weekend work.
  • This is a day shift position


  • High School/GED is required AND at least 5 years prior technical experience in area(s) of specialty
  • Technical training completion/certification or associates degree may substitute for up to 2 years of required experience.
  • Knowledge of basic regulatory requirements.
  • Communication Skills – Ability to concisely communicate key issues to stakeholders
  • Analytical Skills – Ability to assess issues that arise, seek multiple perspectives, gather more information as needed, and identify key issues that need to be addressed.
  • Computer Literacy – Basic competence of spreadsheets, word processing, and email and knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems and purchasing systems.
  • Planning – Ability to design, plan, organize and implement tasks within an allotted timeframe.
