Supervisor, Comparative Medicine

Under the direction of a department manager, provides oversight for day-to-day operations of animal care and animal husbandry facility staff. As a working supervisor, the incumbent will provide routine husbandry including cage changes, handling of laboratory animals, euthanasia, basic operations to ensure sound health and welfare in support of the AbbVie animal research program
Responsibilities
- Oversees day-to-day facility operations including but not limited to providing work direction to animal care technicians.
- Day to day leadership and supervision of up to 4 animal care technical staff.
- Oversees and addresses facility issues with oversight. (i.e. minor repairs, interaction with maintenance, facility functionality, etc.)
- Uphold institutional polices and assure adherence proper documentation and regulatory and safety compliance person in area of responsibility,
- Applies regulatory compliance and animal care and use guidelines: Food and Drug Administration Associate for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC)
- Schedules coverage and support of research projects needs and facility operations
- Manages and orders supplies (personal protective equipment, animal fees, bedding, etc.)
- Advises Manager of staff opportunities (I.e. mentorship, minor conflict resolution)
- Acts as Manager during weekend coverage for three research facilities and 8 –11 staff.
- Covers shifts from 5:50 AM to 2:10 PM however additional time is routinely expected to close out the day’s activities and prepare for the following day. Currently this position is expected to work once every 4 weekends which includes Saturday and Sunday as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field and less than one year experience.
- Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or Certified Animal Research (CMAR) certification or the ability to attain such credentials preferred.
- Flexibility to work scheduled weekends (once every 4 weeks) and devote additional weekday hours as needed; initiative, strong work ethic, integrity
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse personalities.
- Less than one years’ experience in the field of laboratory animal science
- Ability to provide work direction to cover day to day operations to staff in the field of laboratory animal science,
- Basic technical research skills (i.e. Overdose and blood collection on rat/mouse)
- Demonstrated advancement in the field of laboratory animal science; Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) with documentation; species diversity experience (including non-human primate) experience preferred
