AbbVie’s Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, human genetics, pharmacogenomics and population cohorts (with access to over 1 million genomes) and collaborates across all R&D as well as other business areas including manufacturing and corporate strategy.  Within the GRC, the Department of Bioinformatics drives research through data analysis and data integration for the identification and validation of new targets, elucidating underlying biological mechanisms for disease development and progression, project advancement, and translational biomarker research, and patient stratification.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist I/II, Bioinformatics to join our team based in our North Chicago, IL, headquarters.  The successful candidate will join a small team supporting bioinformatics analysis stemming from our collaboration with Calico.  This collaboration focuses on discovery, development, and bringing to market new therapies for patients with age-related diseases.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Support bioinformatics for ongoing and new research projects in age-related disease areas
  • Identify biomarkers of drug response and adverse events using internal omics data (e.g. expression microarrays, bulk RNAseq, GWAS, DNA methylation arrays, OLINK, targeted sequencing) from clinical trials
  • Use public and internal omics data to investigate potential drug targets
  • Work closely with scientific teams to design experiments, analyze data and communicate results to an audience with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise.
  • Work with bioinformatics engineers to optimize newly developed computational pipelines into reproducible workflows executable by other bioinformaticians
  • Develop working knowledge of relevant therapeutic areas and treatment modalities to contribute to the larger team mission.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors or Masters in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics, or related field with at least 5 (BS) or 2 (MS) years of relevant experience
  • A high degree of technical competency combined with strong communication skills and ability to work in a cross-site, collaborative environment
  • Experience with high-throughput gene expression transcriptomics, enrichment analysis, as well as a familiarity with other types of omics data.
  • Fluency in 2 or more relevant programming languages, such as R, Python, or Perl
  • Knowledge around contemporary data visualization methods such as R Shiny, or Spotfire
  • Experience working in high performance computing (HPC) clusters in a Linux computing environment

Preferred:

  • Masters degree preferred
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting gene expression data for understanding disease mechanisms and model organism prioritization
  • Background in analyzing and comparing diseases across multiple tissues from affected patients and animal models
  • Experience handling, visualizing, recording, and managing data with SQL or other enterprise solutions
  • Fluency with public data repositories like GEO, SRA, and ArrayExpress and mouse model repositories (mgi); familiarity with genomic databases (such as those relating to genome annotation), genetic variants, or consortium disease specific (like the Accelerating Medicines Partnership - Alzheimer's Disease, the Cancer Genome Atlas).
