Associate Scientist I/II, Cancer Biology – Oncology Cell Line Facility

AbbVie's Oncology Discovery group has an opportunity for a highly motivated, organized, and skilled Associate Scientist I/II, Cell Biology. This position will be responsible for supporting progression of oncology drug discovery programs by conducting the daily activities in our Oncology Cell Line Facility. The candidate must be willing to work as part of a multidisciplinary research team under the mentorship of a supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a member of a cancer biology team focused on supporting high quality drug development candidates for promising novel therapeutic targets.  The candidate will be responsible for managing the daily activities to operate, maintain and improve the Oncology Cell Line Facility. This includes acquisition, maintenance, and propagation of human tumor cell cultures in support of Oncology Discovery Research. Key responsibilities will be the acquisition and expansion of cell lines, the cryopreservation and organization of stocks, the organization of inventory, maintenance of inventory databases and dispersal of cell lines to project scientists.

The successful candidate will be expected to rapidly learn the daily operation of the lab, readily adapt to changing project needs, independently plan and execute daily activities, and develop sophisticated problem-solving skills.  Excellent teamwork and communication skills and adherence to good laboratory conduct, documentation practices and safety guidelines are essential.


Position will be hired based on education and experience.


  • BS degree in biology with typically 0-3 years of related industry/postgraduate experience. 
  • Understanding and experience with mammalian cell culture essential.
  • Superior aseptic technique.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized.
  • Fluency with general biology lab procedures such as those described above. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues.
  • Cancer biology or cellular biology experience a plus.


  • Extensive experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience in collaborative teamwork.
  • Detailed working knowledge of the molecular approaches routinely applied to mammalian cell culture (mycoplasma testing, STR analysis, etc.).
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and automation.
