The Director, Business & Brand Strategy leads the strategic execution of enterprise Commercial initiatives across the US Area. This includes elevating the strategic capabilities of US Commercial Brand Teams and those of the cross-functional Integrated Brand Teams (IBT).  This role oversees critical area-wide initiatives to elevate the US Area's future-focused capabilities, business strategy, and planning approach to positively affect business results. This role leads an organization of Business & Brand Strategy people-leaders and individual contributors.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversees large-scale, area-wide initiatives across the entire US Commercial enterprise in a highly matrix environment
  • Leads critical enterprise projects based on continually evolving strategic priorities
  • Partners with Global Commercial Operations to influence commercial operations strategies in a way which can be effectively scaled and rolled out to the US Area
  • Collaborate and influence brand leaders & executives to strategically elevate their brand strategy and planning, including continuous improvement and evolution of strategic and tactical review preparation
  • Continue to evolve the US Area adoption of the AbbVie strategic brand planning process aligned around Integrated Brand Management
  • Connect with cross-functional colleagues and subject matter experts across the brand teams to continuously evolve best practices and provide strategic direction to direct reports as they execute within their Business Units
  • Lead No Numbers Long Range Plan (NNLRP) which assesses the future healthcare environment by gathering key customer insights to develop a US point of view. This includes analyzing future trends and potential organizational implications. This is a critical body of work which rolls up to the most senior Commercial leadership at AbbVie and defines AbbVie’s commercial business strategies.
  • Oversee FutureFit capabilities across the US Area which is AbbVie’s multi-stakeholder approach to define, assess, and develop future-focused capabilities based on No Numbers Long Range Plan findings and Executive Leader insights.
  • Develop the strategy and direction for direct reports to lead and execute the following:
  • Launch Excellence - organizational capability and enterprise approach in commercial launch strategic planning and execution.
  • Integrated Brand Team (IBT) Development – strategy for ongoing elevation of IBT effectiveness
  • Tactical Planning/Tactical Sprint
  • Best Practice Sharing


  • Serve as member of the Commercial Excellence Leadership team and actively contribute to the creation of the Commercial Excellence strategy
  • Facilitate appropriate connections between Business & Brand Strategy team and other key partners such as US Leadership Development, Marketing Excellence, and other functions as appropriate
  • Build a strong team of leaders who are able to influence and lead both direct reports and cross-functionally to enhance brand performance, and lead enterprise-wide, strategic initiatives.
  • Coaches and develops direct reports to become better people leaders and improve performance of business objectives and the Ways We Work.
  • Creates a diverse, inclusive, innovative, and agile team where team members can perform at their best every day.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with key internal partners including Commercial leadership, Marketing, Market Access, Patient Services, Medical, Regulatory, HEOR, HR, IT, Compliance, Legal, Finance, and internal partners.
  • Oversees financial and resource planning to optimize available resources
  • Bachelor's degree in business or related discipline. MBA preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in commercial and/or marketing roles
  • Prior people leadership experience
  • Deep understanding and applicable experience of Sales and Marketing
  • Expert ability to lead in a complex matrix environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to influence senior leaders and clearly articulate strategic objectives.
  • Prior experience executing and influencing strategic business visions
  • Excellent program and process management skills to successfully implement complex business initiatives.
Significant Work Activities: Continuous sitting for prolonged periods (more than 2 consecutive hours in an 8 hour day)
